Hi, I have just replaced a modem in a W2K SP3 box. I can't connect to the net even though windows says it is working properly. If i leave the line connected to the modem the other phones in the house have no dial tone. Any ideas as to what would cause this?

    Thanks

sounds like the phone socket you're plugging into is knackered.. are you using a splitter? if you are, take out the splitter and plug the pc in directly and try again, if that still doesnt work, try another phone socket just to see if it works.

Same problem with a dell fax modem on my old machine. I found that once connected to modem whether pc was on or off the lines were still down. Turned out to be an issue with the modem not the line or phones.

There could be an issue with sp3 and your modem, have you used internet dial up prior to changing modem

The modem's not intended for use in Ireland methinks...
What's the exact make and model of the modem? And where did you purchase it?

How so? Unless the connection is different it still should be compatible once configured correctly?

Its an intel hardware modem, i'll post the exact model when i get home - i bought it in maplin, a white box product. I'm downloading SP4 at the moment to see if that makes a difference.

Phone sockets in Ireland are different from the UK. Sometimes the only way you can connect is by using something that looks like a splitter. What it actaully does is correct the wiring order so it will work on Irish phone sockets.

Had this problem with my first PC. Could dial up and "connect" but was never able to surf/get mail etc. Turned out I hadn't recieved the splitter, once I installed it connection worked from.

    More info here.
