    Hi all,

I purchased a motorbike privately over 2 months ago, however despite numerous phone calls the previous owner has still not sent the registration cert to me - he said he couldn't find it when I bought the bike and that he has applied for a new one - it couldn't take this long, could it?
    What are my options?

Not helping directly but it recently took 3 weeks for me to get a simple change of ownership. The form was filled out and posted by the seller on the date of sale. It was all done with the new style certs too.

Point is that this was longer than it should be so maybe they are not processing things as fast as they should.

That's an incredibly long time, alright. Can't you apply for one yourself, then bring it round to the seller and get him to sign it there and then? That should take care of it. I think it's free too. Or is it only dealers who can do that?

You shouldn't buy a bike without getting the proper documentation. Sounds a bit dodgy. If the owner can't produce the cert at time of sale you should walk away, as it could be a stolen bike, and if the gardai seize it you have no comeback.

This guy could be 100% geniune but still, waiting for him to sort it out is a hassle you could have done without.
I suppose all you can do is keep on at him until you get it. Try ringing the motor tax office (in the county the seller lives) and asking them how long it currently takes to get a duplicate cert.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

this happended to me when i bought my first bike.
You can go to the guards, and they'll give you a form to fill out. Now strictly speaking, your supposed to bring this form to the guy who sold you the bike.
But if the bike is genuinely yours now and you have the sellers name, address etc. Just get someone else to sign it and post it off to shannon, co. clare. Simple as that. Otherwise you'll be waiting bloody ages to get it sorted and chances are the seller (as an idiot as he is) will just make you more frustrated by taking as long as he wants to sign the form.
Not sure what the form is called but if you explain the situation, the guards will help. They usually have them in stock as with licence application forms etc. They deal with this stuff everyday so your not asking for an unusual request.
