The Realist, a comic drama by Garret Baker, premieres in Andrews Lane Studio from May 23rd-June 10th. (Tickets are €15/12. The show starts at 8.15 p.m and booking is on: (01) 6795720. Groups of 10+ €10. Previews May 22nd.)

    Blurb Below:

The Realist is the story of a relationship between a young writer, Peter (Jordan-Lee McGrath), and an older woman, Mary (Barbara Dempsey), put in to jeopardy by the sudden arrival of two of their respective old foes. In Mary’s case it is her rogue of a former husband, Jack (Oliver McQuillan), a drunkard and stage actor of some acclaim who has ruined his career with excesses of wine and women. In Peter’s it is a preening and self interested actress, Holly (Marianne Mc Cullen). Jack shows up, seemingly wanting to rekindle his romance with Mary, and not too thrilled about the presence of the younger man, whilst Holly's interest is in getting herself a part in Peter’s latest production, and she is willing to do almost anything to get it. The four characters become so embroiled with one another that when they finally all come together under the one roof, violence if not tragedy seems certain to ensue.

The play is the latest original work by Garret Baker, blending comedy and drama, and touching on familiar Irish themes of marital infidelity, drunken disappointment, property values, and temptations of old and new. Baker's last production, in November of 2005, "The Flop and the Flunky" was described by Ireland on Sunday as having "great style...and a light comic touch" and by Metro as a "hybrid of Woody Allen and Ferris Bueller." His two novels, The Runts of the Litter and Love nor Lack of Love have been praised by, amongst others, Brendan Kennelly and Ardal O'Hanlon.
