I was just looking around the wonderful net that we live in the other day and found some pretty interesting sites. Just said I would post them and people could use them at will. Maybe a sticky.
http://www.guitarlessonworld.com/ - Nice Simple Lessons goes through scales and all that.
http://www.looknohands.com/chordhouse/ - An excellent resource site on chords and scales. I am using this and Paperless Printer so put all the things onto my PSP for mobile chord sheets!
http://www.ibreathemusic.com/ - Haven't actually used this one but sure said I would throw it on anyway, looks to have some good articles.
http://www.zentao.com/guitar/ - Theory and stuff covered for basic and advanced.
http://guitargeek.com/ - Rig database so you can see how others set up.
Thats all I can find that I have saved the links for. People should feel free to add more stuff to this list.

Anybody looking to learn the guitar should take a look here.

It is a site for beginners and beyond and run by Kirk Lorange. It is free to join and you must join to view the lessons. I have been a member of this site now for the last year and learned lots from the contributors.

It is a very friendly site and i promise all questions (no matter how stupid you may think it is) will be answered.

    www.justinguitar.com

Some very beginner stuff but i'm sure they have an advanced section aswell, they also have LOADS of great lesson videos on Youtube.

I came across a great new resource site recently. After a quick glance through the stickies, I didn't see it mentioned here.

    www.jguitar.com
    JGuitar wrote:
JGuitar is a set of useful tools for players of stringed instruments. JGuitar's powerful chord and scale calculators replace traditional chord and scale dictionaries by providing dynamic calculation which works for any stringed instrument in any tuning. Users can alter the tunings of the instruments and even the instruments themselves. In fact, JGuitar was designed to work with any number of strings or frets.

Try www.licklibrary.com I know it's not free but there's some really good stuff on there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,218 ✭✭✭Zangetsu

    www.abclearnguitar.com

Been reading through the lessons on this site this morning.

It explains in a straight forward and easy to understand way how scales are formed.

It teaches you how to not only read sheet music but how it relates onto guitar. If your interested in learning theory, this provides an excellent base for your studies.

Does anyone have any decent sites/info on modes? Really can't find anything with a decent introduction to them!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,065 ✭✭✭✭Malice

Here is an online bass and guitar tuner. It needs Flash and is a little awkward to use as you have to hover over the strings but I find it quite useful.

Here is a tool to help memorise the notes on the guitar fretboard. Flash is also required for this one.

    www.justinguitar.com

Hands down the best guitar lessons you'll ever find on the internet.
Justin's method is easy, fun and really helpful for becoming a good guitarist. I've been playing guitar for over 3 years and I still regularly keep visiting his website cuz his lessons are just amazing to make you a good guitarist.

Especially his beginner lessons are exactly what every beginner needs to nail down the guitar basics and fundamentals.
I'ld say look nowhere else on the internet for guitar lessons cuz this guy is the best when it comes to teaching guitar!! Especially for the beginners.

I got a free 7 day subscription to Jamplay.com when I bought a Kyser capo and I found it very helpful. They had more tutorial videos than I could hope to get through, with good teachers in lots of genres.

Other than that, I would have to add my +1 to everyone recommending Ultimate Guitar.

YouTube is also great for lessons, some really good and some are just average.

You'll develop calluses soon enough, the more you play the harder the skin on your fingers will get! I've been playing 13 years and I mine still get a bit sensitive after a few hours of playing ;)

When people say practice as much as you can, this is easy if you are making some kind of music not so if you are not,,,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,218 ✭✭✭Zangetsu

Do you know all the chords?

How many rhythm patterns do you know?

    Any scales?

How many songs can you play the full way through?

    http://www.justinguitar.com/en/BC-000-BeginnersCourse.php

This should keep you busy! Learning guitar was the best thing I ever decided to do, couldn't imagine my life without it! Stick with it, you'll get better over time!

I went to the Justin Guitar site very helpful,
I know the cords but putting them together is hard work.
    Will keep on strumming ..

    I'm using www.guitartricks.com

Ive found the vids really useful and am at the moment struggling F to B and back;)

Its costs a few quid for the year, about the same as a Dublin teacher for 4 lessons so if you look at it that way its not so bad!

kinda true, when i started playing i was a on/off practicer for 2 years(basiclly once in a blue moon) before i really got down to regular practise, the pain on the fingertips and fear of snapping strings can throw a load of people off regular playing

i owe the start of my playing to a few hour long lessons at my local collage for a tenner a lesson,
and the majority to ultimateguitar.com (icon14.gif)and total guitar/guitarist mags, those two mags are my bibles are i'd recomend em to anyone beginner or pro

I'm trying (and struggling) to learn to play by ear, anyone know what the best site for giving tips and help? Just can't seem to train my ear, very frustrating.

Any recommendations on guitar books for improvers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,009 ✭✭✭✭wnolan1992

I'm a lefty and got a lefty guitar today. Gotta say, I was shocked at how little dexterity I have in my right hand atm...any tips on improving this? All the sites I've read say the chromatic scale is the best, but I'm finding this a pain in the hole as well (will stick with it though, can't hurt.)

Also was wondering if I'll be ok to follow online lessons (as they all use righty guitars)? As in, is there any difference in how the chords are constructed, apart from the obvious "opposite hand" answer?

Also, a huge +1 to www.justinguitar.com which is great. :)

Just about to start a Thread and spotted this one...

    1) What would be a good site to get the Chords for well known songs from? In a nicely laid out format?

    2) Is their anywhere with some good well explained short beginner Videos, I want to make.....like a tutorial DVD out of a few good ones.

    3) What are some good easy songs for a beginner (not me) to learn to play, would "James Blunts, Your're Beautiful" be a good one?

Thanks for any response, some of my questions are probably answered in the Thread already, I didn't have time to read it just now.

    Hi guys,
I've recently come into alot of free time and I was thinking of using it positively by taking up the guitar. I'm no spring chicken but I absolutely love music and always have. Since I'm only beginning and have no knowledge of music theory I was just wondering do ye have any advice on what is the best way to learn to play and what is the best way to go about it.Any advice would be much appreciated.

Been following this guy's lessons for the last few weeks:

He has a site too with a huge lesson plan. He's also more of a "technique" teacher and his cord exploration lessons are spot on.

    ck.

A guy called Andy Guitar on Youtube has some good lessons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,272 ✭✭✭✭Atomic Pineapple

Tried following him before, and tried Justin Guitar before as well. Didn't really gel with either. Might be the Youtube format. Looking for alternatives.

Justinguitar must be the most widely recommended teacher on the web, and is fantastic, but his style didn't gel with me either.

I found Guitartricks really good. Lots of lessons and 1000s of song tutorials with full tab. There's regular options for 100e annual subs and I've kept mine up although I don't use it as much now. If you were to use it as your only lessons site it would be worth double IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 995 ✭✭✭Ryder

also martymusic and paul David worth a look. Especially Paul David, his lessons look really good
