As im sure you all know we will no longer have the right to watch the European cup on terrestial tv.If we want to watch it from now on we will have to pay the very broke people at sky sports. Why is it that our brillant government can get soccer matches shown live on tv but they cant get our beloved rugby matches shown from now on. I dont know about you guys but matches like the final today, the Leinster v Toulouse and the Leinster v Munster match were macthes that i wont forget in a long time and it seems a shame that we are being deprived of the chance to witness any future matches which may live up to these matches.

I think you'll find that Sky own the rights to some of the soccer games. Although that was partly RTE'S fault.

Shame we won't see McGuirk and Co. live.

I have a better solution. Go down the pub and get slaughtered for every match, end up in A&E and when the government blame us for being irresponsible and costing the Health Service loads of money - we can just tell them it's their fault for selling out to Sky Sports. That'll learn em.

    Who are you? Marie Antoinette?

RTE will still have rights to deferred coverage and (hopefully) highlights packages. That will do those of us who will be attending our teams' home matches just fine.

Though it is a shame any overseas knockout matches won't be shown live.

And Murdoch (and Derek McGrath) can stick their Sky Sports subscriptions up their holes.

The government were complaining about the international football getting sold to sky. This isnt international rugby. Theres no preservation order ( or whatever the hippy rule is called) protectiing the champions league, so why should this be any different?

Its an utter joke. I'm lucky enough in that I go to the home matches that i can and watch most of my HC rugby in the pub otherwise, but its bull.

my only hope is that they might find other matches to show instead? maybe some club level stuff? maybe? nah, didnt think so :(

You are paying a subscription to rte so whats the difference, if you really wanted to watch the matches (without going to them obviously) just cough up the money. There isn't anything else you can do, except moan about it, which isn't going to do anything!

I think Sky do a good job. I can watch almost all of the European cup pool games, and all of the knock out games. RTE never gave us this level of coverage.

It costs about €9 to go to the cinema. It costs €20 to go to a Leinster home Celtic League game.

For about €60 per month I get all of the Sky programmes (including Sports and Movies). Thats just €2 per day. Not too expensive really?

It's not the expense I object to, it's the principle. The more sports Murdoch buys up, and gets an in crease in subscriptions thereafter, the more encouragement he receives to continue buying up sporting events.

Anyway, the RTE coverage is fantastic, I can't imagine what commentary line-up Sky can produce that would beat Hook, Pope and McGuirk. My preference would always be, when not in attendance, to sit at home, with my dad (an armchair critic, it's like sitting beside Hook sometimes ;)), rte coverage and a nice glass of Jameson. No pub can beat that combination! :)

Now I need to find a good pub to watch rugby matches in

Well to be honest, in my opinion nobody covers sport like sky does so it's not all a bad thing. Its not fair on those who for whatever reasons can't afford it, but unfortunetly nothing can be done for that.

Terrestrial tv doesn't have Celtic League either, or aren't you bothered about that?

It's all about the money in this day and age of "professionalism", so it was the logical conclusion that sooner or later RTE would be squeezed out. Their priority isn't sport, it's personalities. Otherwise how would they justify the big bucks that Kenny, Duffy, Finucane et al receive.

That said, will I miss the poor coverage and stilted opinions of RTE sport. Doubtful.

Sky coverage, on the whole, is pretty good and is comprehensive in that they don't just come on 5 minutes before kick-off and they have full analysis afterwards. If you enjoyed the typical "rugby club" b0ll1x of Hook and McGuirk, I'm sorry for your loss. Personally I prefer my pundity to be about rugby and not what the great Nelson Mandella said in court on the day of his trial or similar bull Hook comes out with laced in with what passes for an opinion.

Besides, Sky also has Super14, Tri-Nations, all the home nations tours in the Southern Hemisphere, and GP. If you like your rugby, it's the only way to go!

can watch later on rte or go to match ,but not with sky,no way

Who's moaning? I've just said they're not going to blackmail me into buying a subscription to watch a whole load of ****e I'm not interested in. eg cricket, Premiership football, Ryder Cup, monster truck driving etc etc That's all.

If they had a package just to provide rugby I'd think about it. But the all or nothing deals are anathema to me.

And it just goes to show how one person's perspective differs from another. I have an 11-year old son. He's pretty active but like all kids loves to slob out in front of the telly watching the sports. If we got Sky we'd never get him off the couch. And although I can go to the pub to watch the games, he is forbidden by law from doing so if it goes past 9'o clock.

So I miss the delightful parental experience of watching the matches I want to watch with my son.

Apart from the ones I take him to of course.

I suspect ERC will learn the error of their ways. Especially when their sponsors get twitchy about reduced audiences.

eh....some please correct me if i am wrong but does tg4 not show Celtic League matches? As far i was aware tg4 is a terrestrial station.

What i will personally miss most about RTE not having the coverage is the pre+ post match analysis from hook,Pope and McGuirk. They really were worth tuning into for the match analysis imo

Actually, snickers man has a good argument for why i won't be getting sky sports - i'd like to pass the college year please. Sky sports will have my life sapped away in no time.

Consider yourself corrected. TG4 lost CL a couple of years back to Setanta, which is free to NTL subscribers.

Sky subscribers have to pay extra for that. Although S4C and BBC Wales show home games for the Welsh teams, so if you don't mind listening to Welsh commentary or worse again, Johathan Davies, you can watch them on there too.

In NZ I believe there is a Rugby Channel. Now that would be worth a couple of quid!!!!

This is a bad thing for Rugby, the sport was getting a huge audience and people playing the sport was on the increase, is that not what they wanted. The amount of viewer next year wont be as much as this year but they wont care, this damages the sport.

If RTE are smart they should swoop in to buy up Celtic League matches, although I think Setanta currently has the rights to that.

It would mean there would be a wider audience for Celtic League games and it might keep people's interest in the local leagues.

It's a pity TG4 didn't do a better job televising Celtic League but then they had no budget. And my Irish may not be the best but it's not too awful and I couldn't understand a WORD those two Connemara commentators were saying.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,939 ✭✭✭mikedragon32

I never minded watching CL games on TG4, it was a lot less painful not understanding the language than having to listen to the Robinson fellow on Setanta... He's terrible! Sometimes it's better not to know what's being said.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 777 ✭✭✭MarVeL

Quite enjoyed the matches on TG4 myself. Even added one or two to the cúpla focail by osmosis

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,686 ✭✭✭EdgarAllenPoo

Ok will someone clarify this for me. From next season heineken cup matches are on sky sports only, they also have the english premiereship and Setanta has schools and Celtic League. Is that all present and correct? If so I may have to fork out for Setanta(you can't get NTL in Dunshaughlin), I'm not getting enough rugby as it is.

One more thing, just exactly how does the AIL work out as far as tv coverage. I've only seen a few game on rte. Is there anyway to see more?

I live in Dunshaughlin, there is no team here, my other options are Navan or Ashbourne but as far as I know neither are in the AIL.

    RTE's AIL coverage = Playoffs + finals.

They used to show more, but why fork out on outside broadcasts on a Saturday when you can show horse racing or maybe a movie from the 50's.

Don't forget, Sky also have Super 14, Curry Cup, Tri Nations, all the home nations tours in the southern hemisphere and the Churchill cup.

Setanta have CL and 7s. Oh yeah Leinster schools Senior Cup competition and Junior final.

You could always just pop down to your nearest club on a saturday afternoon during the season. Always a good chance there's a home game on.

Hell, I'll watch the sport at any level!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 794 ✭✭✭electric69

BBC have good coverage of the rugby League and Union. We can watch that for free :D It would be great if somebody like tv3 could get coverage of the super14 matches.Im sure they would draw the audiences for them.Wouldnt mind watching a few state of origin matches.never seen matches as physical and intense as them + you are guaranteed a bit of the old handbags in every match!:D

Won't get sky. Can't watch HC or CL. Some thing I'll have to live with.

There is no way in the wide earthly world RTE can match sky's megabucks (or even Setanta's) so why even bother trying.
Unfortunate, because although sky's technical grasp is better, the journalistic side of the shows is utter, utter ****e, and have always spoiled my enjoyment of the few games I have seen in other places. Hook, Popey et al may annoy some of ye but they are infinitly better at analysis and interpretation that any of the sycophants sky wheel out.

Also, as said elsewhere I will not give Murdoch anything. News Corpse already control too much of what we see and hear.:(

That is what will probably happen. I won't complain if they do. If all I can watch is the likes of the Cookies vs Trinity in a mid-winter slog fest so be it.

IIRC sky spent more on the premiership last year than RTE was able to spend on sport and light entertainment together, which are their two biggest individual spends. Then when you consider the range of programmes RTE have to put out 'tis hardly surprising they are unwilling to pay for sport like that.

    Old arguments, but still valid.
