Looks like numbers will be limited. Still, if you HAVE to get some World Cup HD action there are other options, right?

Yeah. The BBC HD and a Pace HD box costing the same price as a sky HD box.

Which indeed could easily end up being the ONLY way to see the World Cup in HD in Ireland.

A lot of people seem to think Sky have World Cup rights. They don't. You won't get HD World Cup footage without BBC HD and thats not on the Irish EPG.

So basically, you cant get BBCHD even if you pay for HD, as a sky customer in ROI. I can see no logical reason for this. We can recieve all other BBC channels, albeit, through a back door route.

Sky+ customers for some time have been upset that they can't record ITV, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, BBC3, BBC4, BBC News 24, BBC parliament, CBBC, CBeebies etc.

These all work on a non-Sky PVR direct from Satellite. It is Sky's EPG system that prevents them recording on an ROI subscription.

Only the EU can fix this. Sky are exploiting a loophole. The "other channels" feature that they must provide by law, only has to provide ordinary viewing, nothing more.

Get a PACE or other FTA PVR/HD receiver as well as Sky HD. A small extra once off price compared with Sky's annual subscription and compared with a decent HDTV.

I have two Sky digiboxs and a FTA receiver. The only complete solution for ROI viewers. If I had an HDTV I would have two SkyHD receivers and a nonSky HD PVR.

Yes, but my question is why? What advantage does it give sky? Surely the more they offer, the more subscribers they will get, the more money they make. The more they offer, the less likely the customer will change to a FTA system. I don't quite see their logic on this one.

    Watty,
FTA PVR/HD as well as Sky HD? Why would you need both? How does this avoid paying monthly HD sub? (I thought the SKY HD box without sub is considerably more expensive)

They want total control over the platform.

They want broadcasters to PAY to be on UK EPG and extra for ROI EPG

They are not interested (currently) in promoting channels not on the EPG, nor features without you paying extra.

If you in Ireland want Irish TV on Satellite and/or pay TV channels you need a Sky box.

If you want all the BBC/ITV in Irealnd easily and to record them free, then you need a non-Sky PVR.

The same will apply to HDTV in Ireland.

Armstrongs are releasing boxes today on the understanding that a forced download is necessary to fix the software issue. I've been allocated a grand total of one box :)

    Tony,

Is that one box for your own use or is it for a customer?
