My computer doesn't work good...

    I'm not majorly stupid when it comes to computers, but I'm in trouble. There are certain (important) things that I can't do on my computer.

    I've various types of e-mail adresses but can't send e-mails from any of them. From one, I can only read mails. From another I can read them, write a reply, but when I click on 'Send', nothing happens.

    When I'm on a web-page, if I try to use the 'Find' feature, I can't. The 'close window' button on it doesn't even work. I have use the top right 'close' button.

    Also, even on boards.ie, the list of other pages at the top, isn't there. I've to go to the homepage, then the section, then the actual place I want.

    I used Spybot (I think) to clear out any nasties that might be on the computer. And the previous equivalent.

    Any ideas what I could do?

    (Oh yeah, smilie buttons don't work either.)

    And I've Windows XP.

    I was using Avant Browser (which, I think is fairly much like IE). I just got Firefox today, but there's no difference.

    And when I set up my account, I was listening to Badly Drawn Boy...:D

    I also deleted all of the cookies I had, and a lot of the bigger files.

    Actually, now that I think about it, my brother blamed me for wrecking the computer in the family home (but he hasn't a clue). Certain things weren't accessible the day after I used the computer. When I cleared the cookies for him, the problem was solved. But not on my computer.

    But the problem was similar...

    If the OP doensn't know anytrhing about computers there is little point in him running Hijack This. That is unless he wants to post the report here.

    Anyway, what sort of protection do you have on your pc?
    I'm going to assume that you have not taken all the necessary precautions, but if you have, I apologise.

    All the programme types listed below are essential. These may be free programmes, but they are as good, if not better, than most commercial products.

    You will need:

    a firewall such as zone alarm
    (http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10039884.html);

    an antivirus programme such as avast
    (http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3000-2239_4-10533644.html?tag=lst-0-1);

    and antispyware programmes - e.g. windows defender
    (http://www.download.com/Microsoft-Windows-Defender/3000-8022_4-10502712.html?tag=lst-0-1),

    spybot S&D
    (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1),

    and adaware
    (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=lst-0-1) to mention a few.

    Update the definitions with the AV and antispyware and then run them. I suspect that this will sort out your problems. Be selective in the sites that you view which will cut down on crap that your pc will get infected with, e.g. by clicking here you won't win an i Pod, but you will get some spyware instead. Also, you should consider using firefox over IE. You'll enjoy much safer surfing, and it has all sorts of useful extentions that can be added to enhance your web-based pleasure.

    :D

    try booting up in safe mode,does it make any difference ?run full antivirus check, update antivirus definitions, use firefox instead of ie, some sites need ie to work 100percent,like banks etc,ie is full of security holes,update pc to sp2 winxp, after you fix this problem,download adaware.It stops malwaremspybot is not enough by itself.

    Thanks for yer suggestions. I can now actually e-mail people. And see the boards.ie menus at the top.

    (I think Avant Browser/IE was a big problem. Previously I wasn't even able to download Firefox. Since I have, stuff is working better...)

    Go raibh maith agaibh...:D
