Was up at my local nightclub last night and they wouldnt let me in cos im on crutches! surely this is illegal or something or discrimination, if I had of went up in a wheelchair would they of refused me?

Im going to be on the cructches for another 2 months and my exams finish this week and was looking forward to a good night out next week with the rest of my class, but I cant go if this is the way im going to be treated.

Does everywhere in town operate the same policy? COs if they do looks like I wont be going out. I know there cool about it in pubs but whats so different about clubs, im hardly going to be up dancing and I probly wont even drink.

    ?????

at the end of the day, the management reserve the right to refuse admission.
However, they can not do so on grounds of discrimination.
I'd say in your case, they are using health and safety reasons - i.e. you'd be an issue in a fire scenario / evacuating the premises.
I've heard such stories before for niteclubs, but not in pubs.

A friend of mine was in crutches before and as soon as the bouncers saw he was on crutches, they let him in another door which was for wheelchair access so he wouldnt have to stand in the big long queue and have to manage the stairs..

A while ago a work colleague broke her leg. She wasn’t allowed to work for 6 weeks because she worked up stairs.

It was down to the fact that in the case of a fire she wouldn’t be able to evacuate as fast or as safely as every one else.

She didn’t care and she didn’t think it was discrimination.

Well if anyone does know nightclubs in Dublin that do/dont let people in cructhes in, let me know !

But surely if I was in a wheelchair I would be even more of a hazard in a fire situation? They have to take account of this so therefore shouldnt be a problem I think.

Maybe they are afraid you might get someone a belt with one. It happened to a friend of mine (who thought he was a bit of a tough guy) and the bouncers knew he was a trouble maker. Probably not the same or your case....or is it? :)

The Equal Status Act of 2000 covers this.

Where applicable, a service provider (in this case a club) should make every effort to accomodate a disabled person's access to that service. However, if providing this access would result in significant cost to the service provider, they are exempt from their obligation.

They are also permitted to refuse a disabled person's access to a service, if they would present a danger to themselves or to others.

So, essentially yes they can do this. Especially since a lot of nightclubs only provide stairs to access the club.

I know a nightclub that lets people on crutches in free. Im told this is for insurance reasons. Dont really understand it, perhaps somebody could shed some ligh on it.

Heard this too, and this is the reason i have heard(not sure if its ture or not).

When you pay the cover charge into a club this covers your insurance. If you dont pay a insurance charge and get in free you are not covered by their insurance. And since a person on crutches is most likely to have a accident in a club they let them in for free.

In reality the main reason a person on crutches isn't let into a club is for the clubs image reasons. Sad but its true.

Now that you say it I have heard this before but never thought there was any truth in it, seems a bit silly.

thats a good point gary, if the clubs have a worry over disabled people causing problems they should reduced the number they allow in, so many small pubs and clubs over fill their venues.

Yes, the "More Slappers, Less Cappers" policy is common.

my local nightclub has, on occasion, refused people on crutches, but they do allow my wheelchair bound friend in. i would imagine the no crutches policy is there to keep out people like your friend.
not that it stops fight. you're guaranteed to see at least one on any given night.

Maybe they'd let you in covered your crutches in cotton wool... then they wouldnt be dangerous!

Try operating a pair of crutches when ur drunk.... Think about that one and come back and give me a reason why Mr. Bouncer should let you in?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,665 ✭✭✭gary the great

as i said, i wont be drinking, and i have operated the crutches while drunk, im on them a month now I know how to use them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,123 ✭✭✭stepbar

So how does Mr.Bouncer know that?? Because you tell him? Why should he believe you? Im not defending bouncers a lot of them are not very nice but if if I was a bar owner to me ur a risk and thats why I wouldnt let you in
