this is probably a common and stupidly general question but my internet has slowed to a virtual standstill over the last few days. there were a few viruses detected last week but im pretty sure i deleted them as they are not showing up anymore when i run AVG. it only seems to be the internet and things like msn etc. that are uber slow. the virus had something to do with java i think if that helps. i have eircom 2mb broadband by the way, basically any help in fixing this would be much appreciated. sorry for the lack of proper information.

You could install a firewall and retrict access to the internet to all programs except your web browser

    or

try this program Net Limiter It allow's you to adjust how fast internet enabled programs can access the internet.

Ok sorry to bring this up again but this is riculous how slow it still is. I have run all the anti spyrware and anti- virus programs and gotten the various firewalls etc., can't find anything major wrong. Its the same on both firefox and IE, it just takes ages for any page to load and when you click on something it takes minutes for soemthing to happen a lot of the time, its not the actual connection that the problem cos my brothers laptop works perfectly. It may be something to do with java because the last virus was java related (it said in results the viruses were Java/ByteVerify), for all i know the virus could still be there but nothing is showing up so i don't know. any other suggestions please?, thanks in advance :)

How are you connecting to the internet? Have you tried it on another connection?

i have eircom broadband, no i havent tried it on other connections but the fact that my brothers laptop is working grand would suggest that isn't the problem, the strange thing is that the actual download rates in things like limewire and utorrent are normal

already tried that i'm afraid, and a few other things suggested in the eircom support, no change. what i'm realy wondering now is whether or not java being messed up would cause this to happen

i have the same problem when using a torrent download program, try closing utorrent and check thinsg out again, i use bicomet, get great speeds from it, but it effects my internet like browsing and legally !! downloading, i think its a port problem, but i dont wanna go messing with my router and forward the wrong ports.

Restart in safe mode then do the Spybot & AdAware scans to ensure the Spyware is not resident in memory.

Could be a DNS Problem, how good is your computer knowledge? Can you check this out yourself?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,864 ✭✭✭MunsterCycling

ipconfig /flushdns > Clears the DNS cache
ipconfig /all > Displays the full list of all ip settings and adaptors on a machine
ipconfig /all >c:\IPSETTINGS.txt > Sends the output of ipconfig to text file named IPSETTINGS.txt which can be found in C:\ type this at the command prompt Start>Run>cmd (useful for posting ip Settings on boards...)

Have you tried limiting your upload in p2p programs such as limewire and utorrent?
