i was a member of a well known gym in north county dublin(clontarf/Fairview area). i quit, my main reason was because of the amount of posers there.
I only used the place for my small bit of weight training and swimming, i did my runs outdoors.
around january febuary a ton of these wannabe peter andres and bimbos invade the area(driving to gym in their huuge jeeps)why drive to the gym??run!!!!or jog. and it does my head in. they spend most of their time in front of mirrors, take ages to set up the weights and float around in the pool.
also on the ****ty days in winter they are hoggin the paths goin really slow with all their new nike and adidas gear, with i-pods in the ears and air max on their feet. it does my head in, the when the stormy weather comes they are no where to be seen, quite funny really then around march they dissapear never to be seen again.
does anybody here notice this or have any funny stories bout them

i have been in a college gym for the last few years and it is a little worse for me as we get 2 waves of new people every year. We get the people who join at the start of the college year and then never come back and then the new years crowd aswell that soon piss off, so this happens no matter what gym you go to. It is the nature of the industry most gyms make there money from the people that don't go.

The one benefit of a college gym though is that it is pretty quite now for the next few months with most of the kids going back home for the summer

i wouldnt let them bother you godfather69er, just go to the gym to do what you need to do, try not to take notice of those idiots.

I drive to the gym because i live far away from it, i think alot of other people do that aswell.

I wouldnt quit a gym because there was something like that annoying me.

    RELAX :D

I know the gym you mean and i left it cos i thought its more of a general kind of place, lots of cardio and not enough weights.

But sure never let other people in a gym bother you, just do your own thing, and as you get fitter etc you'll have more confidence and won't even notice the posers!

why drive to the gym??run!!!!or jog.

then when the stormy weather comes they are no where to be seen,

Why would I bother walking three miles to the gym? Or indeed jogging three miles home again? Do you walk or jog to the gym when it's lashing rain outside? I presume you're just some 17 year old kid jealous because there are people in the gym fitter and stronger than you. And you're jealous that they drive too.

actually i am 18 you will see me doin 8 miles every 2 days on the roads around raheny, killester, clontarf and believe me you will see me in rain, snow hail wind it all aids the training, and i have alredy done the dublin city marathon (3hr 15min) not bad for a first time and i was doin more tempo training than serious distance so these lil posers dont bother me in that way its just they hog the machines and get in my way, does my head in, i wouldnt mind if it was because they were really into they are just there because the desperate housewives and other us tv characters go to the gym!!!!!

and 6miles to gym and back jaysus ye might have a heart attack!!!

Maybe the don't stay going because of all the skinny runners who keep staring at them??? :D j/k

In all seriousness dude, you get all sorts in all gyms, and sometimes they get to us all but it just needs to be dealt with.

Don't let it distract you from your own goals.

snow hail wind, it all aids training eh? Seems like you have some kind of complex going on there. As for you posting how much you run and your marathon times, my first marathon I ran sub 3hrs. What has that got to do with anything. You have no idea why they want to go to the gym, so they might not be up to your standard but they are still trying to stay in shape. What's wrong with wanting to look good at the same time? I'm better than you but I don't look down on you. Do them the same courtesy.

I deliberately joined a gym where all the old ladies discuss the benefits of the free travel pass in the changing rooms!

Now I feel like a poser (though I'm anything but).

There are lots of fruitcakes though - one thing I really enjoy is the really silly and funny exercises people do to warm up or cool down.

oh god. my cóck is bigger than your cóck, so what i say goes.

grow up children and stop being so bloody intolerant of other people.

people go to a gym to look and feel good about themselves. let them enjoy themselves. at least theyre getting some excercise.

Did they do something in particular to offend you? Or is it that you feel intimidated when you're around them even though they could be perfectly nice people?

I always find it funny when people question why I eat the way I do, or say "I would never want to get that big!". A couple of weeks later it changes to "so what would I need to do to get bigger arms?" or something.

As for steroid use, I'd say it's definitely on the increase, but it's not everyone - and sometimes you'ld be very surprised at who is taking them and who isn't!

Defo, you'll find muppets who don't even know how to use the thing properly.

    Steroid users!!??

you can't talk to them, they just explode in your face with anger and rip their shirts off and eat chickens alive..

Now what was that about big arms?? :D

the point of my post is they dont try to stay in shape, they leave after a month and some posers do look down on you ive had comments on my runners all the way to why i dont run with sunglasses(what the fcuk).
and fair play for your marathon but if you read the posts i wasnt bragging i was informing somebody that i am not unfit and feeling intimidated by these,

OP is right about this particular gym though,im gettin pretty sick of it myself and its over priced, think i might just join a weight gym instead

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 92 ✭✭nubbintom

I used to be slightly intimadated by some users in my gym, I wear old runners, and tracksuit bottms both which could do with replacing, however I was told when I started doing free weights to ignore everyone else, all the posers etc..the exact words were f*** them :D . So anytime I go to lift weights I realy dont care who's there, I just get on with it. :)

I like the posers in the gym.

The hot chicks are eye candy and the big lads are motivating for me. I know how hard it is to get the body they have (particularily the big lads) so they're entitled to be proud about themselves.

TBH I'd rather the place was full of posers than fat chicks misusing the equipment...

Theres one guy in that westwood, who seems to live there, while in good shape en all, everytime you walk by him and his talking to somebody its always about working out/recommending an exercise, obsesseddddd! Fair play and all but please stop tucking your world gym sweat top inside your tracksuit dude

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

I used to get nervous walking in there in case i would be doing something wrong but i quickly overcame it. Let's face it, u do look like an absolute tit when your doing something wrong in the free weights section. There is one guy who looks like a rocker and he is a bit overweight and he goes down a few times a month and when he does go down, he does the most ridiculous form ever, like he would put on max weight on the chest press and he wouldn't be able to move it...like at all. So then he would think he is actually doing reps by lifting it half an inch off the bottom and slamming it down...and he proceeds around all machines doing that and then in the free weights, it's the same thing, he would pick up 12's and try doing bicep curls and he gets nowhere and then thinks he is doing reps.

If i was an instructor, i would tell him how to do it properly...i would appreciate people telling me if i am doing something wrong so i can learn better but only if they have the credentials to back it up...

I don't think that's fair tbh, he obviously knows what he's doing and he's trying to help people out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,723 ✭✭✭empirix

I wasnt knocking him really, i appreciate he works hard for his shape(upper body anyway) and he is helpful, i have seen him help people out but i was thinking about when he talks to some regulars who he knows and often talks to - its just everytime i walk by the conversation is about routines etc, like these can be going on for a good 15 mins, what are they talking about - but each to their own

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

Well when you are in a gym, i thought you would talk about that...?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,723 ✭✭✭empirix

Yes you would, along maybe with other things, although i don't talk to anyone and just do my training and go, but talking about routines for at least a half an hour of your session with the same guys day in day out!

meh, I'd rather talk about routines than chat about random rubbish. you said he's in good shape? well people who aren't in as good shape prolly just want advice to help them look that way. I'm always looking for new ideas for routines, change is a good thing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,249 ✭✭✭✭Kinetic^

Empirix, let me get this straight, anytime you walk by this guy he's talking about routines......well then the guy must have no life

You're in a gym, the guy is obviously focused on what he's doing as he's not standing up against the squat rack talking about how he got sloshed the night before.....why don't you leave the jealousy at home the next time you go the gym or maybe focus on why you're actually there in the first place!!!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,723 ✭✭✭empirix

tbh i aint one bit jealous of him at all and wouldnt want to be him and i am in pretty good shape myself so :p
