It was originally written by Clint Mansell (former member of British early nineties group Pop Will Eat Itself, now film music composer) for the soundtrack to the film Requiem for a Dream, and performed by the Kronos Quartet. Stunning piece of work, combining strings with kind of electronica stuff.
Then along comes some naff orchestra who re-recorded it as a piece of nice, sanitised generic music for film trailers (it was used in one of the Lord of the Rings trailers). So that's what it is. Check out Requiem for a Dream if you haven't seen it (amazing, but be warned: disturbing as hell) or buy the soundtrack. The other toons on it are superb too.
Can't believe Mansell took money for that horrible rehash...

On a side note, after looking for the soundtrack to Requiem for a Dream (amazing movie ftw) on amazon I found a comment from a guy looking for the same piece that bought the soundtrack, only to discover the piece in its entirity(sp?) isn't actually on it!

Apparently its not on any widely availible media format, but can be found on p2p networks with the likes of Limewire.

I haven't, but I'd love to. Todd Solondz is a genius. I've seen Happiness (which, incidentally, features a couple of actors that had bit parts in Requiem for a Dream - one of the other women in Ellen Burstyn's building, the doctor who examines Jared Leto's arm) and Welcome to the Dollhouse. Bleak as hell, but so good.

Not sure what that Amazon guy's on about. I have the soundtrack and it's there all right. Maybe it's the bland orchestral re-recording he's looking for? That's definitely not there, thankfully.
