Sounds like good value - I wonder whether it is good quality?

Wanting one. Bit early considering these'll be an SSIA focus-product. Expensive gadget that everyone wants. Had they released them a month or two later, they could sell tens of thousands.

I'll still get one though. Never did get that SSIA action myself. Damn being underage then.

There were a few 42 inch plasmas in Aldi, when I was in Germany last week. But they were either 1299 or 1499.

Can some one clarify that Lcd's are the future and better picture quality. The reason I ask is because even though lcd's are being made in good sizes for resonable money companies still seem to be making plasma. So I am just wondering if you get your hands on a top quailty lcd will a plasma rival it?

    Thanks

Look. I have never seen an LCD that comes close to a CRT. Atrocious money for something that has nothing going for it only flatness. Is there any hope that we will cop on and not listen to the marketing morons? No I guess :mad: This whole arguement reminds me of Leinster rugby. All style and no substance.

Valentia there are places where crt's just arent appropriate ie: a bedroom. Personally size/flat ness is not a problem in the lounge so I am quite happy with a good quality crt.So back to my original question, anybody!. Also I presume you need a digital signal into either an lcd/plasma to get its worth out of it?

    Blah Blah Blah!

As we move towards HD, CRTs can no longer cut the mustard. I agree at this point CRTs can look a lot better then a badly setup LCD fed on low quality signals such as terrestrial TV. However a correctly configured LCD fed a hi-quality signal such as DVDs or some of the HD content out there completely outshines a CRT.

So I guess we won’t cop on and not listen to the marketing morons ;)

CRT kicks LCD's ass. Plasma isn't worth the money, inferior quality, messy colours. up to 40" get a crt after that LCD HD. my 2 cent

Do you have the remotest clue what you are talking about? What you have said about LCD (when sitting directly in front of the screen) is true of CRT but what HD content are you referring to?? Where is it. All of the stuff shown on Sky so far was not recorded on HD.

Anyway my main point is that you really would need to be more image conscious and have money to throw away to "invest" in the technology this early. I'm an early adaptor myself but I can spot a marketing con when I see one. In 3 years maybe I'll buy one.

Oh yeah sorry, nearly forgot. Blah blah blah yourself.

there are HD CRTs that cut the mustard, however CRTs are size restricted and HD only really starts kicking in with the larger screen, so if this is what you meant then true
All of the stuff shown on Sky so far was not recorded on HD
Nope, 24, many National Geographic and Discovery programs are all in HD with a selection in DD5.1
Can some one clarify that Lcd's are the future and better picture quality
No-one can answer that, it is totally subjective, IMO having experienced LCDs, Plasmas, CRT my choice is a rear projection system, CRT can't go past 32" without massive weight, LCD and Plasma are inferior to the picture that a quality RPG TV can produce, this is my opinion, someone else may prefer LCD/Plasma but this is their opinion, we all have different opinions, simple as that

National Geographic and Discovery programs are all in HD

Now that is interesting (no sarcism intended). I say that because I've always found it odd, frustrating even, that they don't even broadcast in widescreen.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,478 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

I actually prefer the 16:9 HD broadcasts because else I'd be left with those accursed black nothingness's above and below, having the screen filled is better for these programs than forcing me to watch letterbox IMO

just to amplify the english of my earlier post, when i said "all" I am refering to 24, and some Nat G, Discovery as being the "all", I'm not saying all the Nat G, Discovery HD programs are all HD, some are upscaled

The lads on AVForums reckon its a Samsung, not sure how they derive this conslusion but there you go. The last Plasma they released was an LG. Not sure how good it'll be, but I believe the introductory Sammy Plasma on AVForums was given a 7/10 rating. Its biggest failings were black levels.

Well, IMO that would depend on the PQ (:D @ Zod)

You'll find that the specs on almost all the HD 42" Plasma's are pretty close, but it seems that most Plasma lovers will tell you that the Panasonic and Pioneers are so much better, black levels etc. So I guess you wont know until you buy it. If you wait for a review you might miss out, but I doubt it. The upside to ALDI is the no-quibble money back guarantee. If you dont like the PQ, bring it back. My guess is that'll be just fine, not fantastic, and by no means rubbish. If I had a budget of 1499, would I buy it? Probably would..

I think I read somewhere that it's an LG screen with Samsung electronics.

I reckon you'd pay 500/600 more for similar specs elsewhere.

Anyone know if the Brightness spec of 1100/m2 is ok? Any I found were 1300 or even 1500.
