ok heres the thing, while tryin to download msn messenger onto my desktop (with windows xp professional) all goes well and it seems like it is downloading until a box comes up and says "Msn messenger setup has failed with error code: '1601'. Please go to the MSN messenger website http://messenger.msn.com to download the latest version of MSN messenger" but i am trying to download the latest version of it...
any ideas on how to fix this problem?.. thanks in advance.

Windows Live Messenger will be replacing MSN Messenger (its the same program just a name change really) try downloading it instead.

The actual http://messenger.msn.com/ website seems to be broken. Edit: site seems to be working again strange..

Here is a direct link to the old MSN Messenger if you need it.

If the installers for both of the above still fail then download and install the Windows Installer v3.1 and try them again.

Yes - Windows Live is MSN Messenger just a newer version if you install the program it just upgrades your current version and imports your contact list etc.

Okay a Google search found the error code 1601 and MSN Messenger is a common event here is one of the suggested fixes if you do this it should correct the problem and allow you to install Windows Live or MSN.

    1. Click START, and then click RUN.
    2. In the OPEN box, Type "msiexec /unreg" and then click OK <- dont include the quotes
    3. When this process is complete, click START, and then click RUN.
    4. In the OPEN box, type "msiexec /regserver" and then click OK. <- dont include the quotes
    5. Now install Windows Live Messenger or MSN.
