After this weeks flash strike on the Dart , and the bad publicity it generated , does this signal the end of trade unionism in Ireland . Does Partnership and the other social agreements mean anything in 21 st century Ireland . Is it survival of the fittest in the Ryanair generation, or can trade unions recover or have they any place in Modern Ireland. As a private sector worker, unions have no hold where i work, and i envly eye the public sector as well protected and cushioned for life by there unions.

What flash strike on the Dart?

If you mean the strike by train drivers on inter-city routes, then I don't think it signals the end of the trade union movement in Ireland.

I'm not a member of a trade union myself, but I do recognise the importance of them. It was unions that highlighted the use of underpaid workers in the building sector and the use of Philipinos on Irish Ferries. Unions also have an important role to play in ensuring proper working conditions, not just for their members but for all workers. This would include proper health and safety measures.

When union members decide to abandon IR processes to go on strike unofficially they harm the entire trade union movement and not just their own union.

Moreso because of the Ryanair generation (nice wording, btw), the existence of unions is all the more important.
