Sky Digital problems

    Hey,

i got sky installed back in november and it all seemed to be fine for the first while until one day there was a loud bang from the box and all the channels were gone so i rang sky and they sent out an engineer.

the engineer came and was in a bit of a rush and couldnt really figure out what was wrong so he said he'd just put in a new sky box so he stuck in some old fashioned looking thing and tuned the channels in etc. I told him that there was a fault on the extension cable that they had installed to connect from phone socket to the box and he insisted that no it was my actual phone line not his cable so i said fine and let him off.

he had been sitting on the ground beside the tv when using the remote to test the channels and i discovered when he was gone that the remote would only work if you were sitting about 6 inches away from the box which kinda defeats the purpose of having a remote. eventually the remote stopped working completely and changing batteries made no difference.

So anyways to get to my point I have only just gotten around to ringing sky to ask them to come and fix this because i was snowed under with college stuff for the past few months and wouldn't have been able to guarantee a day when I'd be at home for them to call and fix it and now i've realised that its just over 6 months since it was installed so i'll have to pay approx 100 euro for someone to come out and fix it i'm so pissed off like its their fault for not fixing it properly in the first place is there any way i can get them to come fix it and not have to pay that amount?

    Thanks,
    Emee

Forget about paying €100, You only got this in November get on to Sky and demand a new box and telephone connection. You have a years warranty with them.

Stupid question, but have you tried a different remote? You can pick them up cheap enough and if it works, then great, you have saved yourself about 30euro, if not, well then...........

afaik its only 6 months warranty you get with them which is why i'm so annoyed that i didnt ring a couple of weeks back. i was considering buying a new remote but i just thought it was weird that the remote worked perfectly until he put in the new box and then suddenly it wasn't working properly... the whole thing really needs an engineer/technician to look at it i reckon and i just thought if someone came out they'd replace the remote and i would have to bother buying one but now i'm gonna have to pay 100 quid just because its so bloody hard to organise a time with them that suits to fix it like theres no one at home in my house during the day monday to friday and sky won't call out in the evening or at weekend so ya end up having to take a day off from whatever you're doin to hang around waitin for them to call.

im seriously sick of sky should never have bothered gettin it installed. without the remote we barely even make use of having extra channels because ya cant just flick thru whats on ya have to get up every time you wanna change the channels its drivin me mad!

oh ya and yesterday i got something in the post from them saying recommend them to a friend and get 75 euro what a joke i would never recommend them to anyone.

Who told you that you only get a 6 month warranty, I install sky and know you get 1 years {repair or replace} warranty. who did you sign up with for Sky in November was it directly with sky or through an agent or shop

1 year warranties are statutory... if they're claiming 6 months they can expect a nice call from Consumer Affairs.

    hey again,

to be honest i dunno why i had 6 months warranty in me head i just thought for some reason that thats what it was an when i rang today the girl on the phone said oh you do realise it'll cost you if we send someone out and i said hmmmm ok how much do they charge and she said "oh to be honest im not really sure i know its 65 sterling but i dont know what it is in ireland" so at that stage i didnt wanna say oh ok send him out and then be obliged to pay it i said i'd get back to them about it but ive been looking up any of the documents they gave when it was installed and i saw in that that its a 12 month warranty alright. and it was through sky directly that we went not to an agent.

Any ideas why she would tell me i need to pay like the last time i rang when the box exploded there was no mention of money and when the guy came he never mentioned anything about being paid.

so do ye reckon i should get back onto sky and ask why they were saying i had to pay this time around? like i mean its not as if i did something to the box on either occassion to damage it its a problem with their equipment so they should fix it right?

    thanks again for your replies

Get back on to Sky tell them you have a big problem with your equipment.
You will be issued a job referance number and a call out date ask for a Saturday that suits you. They will send out 1 of their sub contracters free of charge to repair or replace your dodgy box
