China Show - the magical slimming herb/tablet

My mother, ever concerned for my weight, has been telling me about this new tablet that some of the ladies in her WeightWatchers class have been trying with great success. They seem to have been throwing off the weight.

So, on her direction I called into the Chinese herbal remedy store opposite Whitefriars Street Church on Aungier St in Dublin. Apparantly this is the only store that stocks "China Show". There's a sign on the door saying that they are out of stock and that more is to arrive next week. This little slimming pill is in such demand that they will not take orders for delivery to anywhere in Greater Dublin, they will post down the country.

Anyway... why I mention it is that I'm wary. What is it exactly? Is it "speed"? Is it something else that could be dangerous? Does anybody know any information about it?

The key ingredient in these tabs is Mahaung, MaHuang, also known as Ephedra, is a source of the Alkaloid family containing Ephedrine, which has been said to be the only known natural substance to exert a primary effect on the Thermogenic process. Used by itself, it is not effective unless extremely high amounts are consumed. Such high levels of consumption are not recommended due to the tendency of this substance to accelerate the heart rate. However, when combined in correct ratios, Ma Huang creates healthy Thermogenesis resulting in weight loss, increased energy, and sinus drainage for many people. This is how it works:

Mobilizes white fat stores into the bloodstream where they are carried to the brown fat to be burned up and dissipated as heat. This is Thermogenesis!

Directs the flow of blood to the muscles. This increases the oxygen and nutrient supply and results in greater energy and endurance.

Directs the flow of blood away from the stomach area. This results in appetite suppression.

Has a very slight stimulatory action on the central nervous system. This produces alertness, enhances mood, and reduces fatigue.

Dries up the sinuses and has a bronchial dilating effect. This helps to treat hay fever, allergies and asthma

Sorry for dragging up an old thread.
Asking on behalf of a friend. Can these pills be bought online, can someone give me a link that contains more information about the pills?

    Much appreciated,

    Thanks!

Are these still for sale? I thought ma huang had been made illegal in Ireland.

As from yesterday Ive been put on this tablet by the guy in the TCM centre on Aungier st. Im about 10 1/2-11 st and told him I wanted to detox and tone up. I feel like Im on herbal E. Does anyone know if this **** is dangerous?
    Kinds starting to worry:confused:

queera - no tablet is going to get you in better shape and if it's illegal I'd guess it must be at least mildly dangerous.

There is no such thing as a detox. It's a marketing myth sold by an industry that's seemingly determined to keep people fat by destroying their metabolisms with crash diets.

If you want to 'tone up' (another term most fitness professionals avoid), have a look at the stickies at the top of this forum.

I am not a professional nor am I close to being in perfect shape myself. I've just started on this road with the benefit of the advice of other's here and on other forums who are far more knowledgeable than me.

    Hi there,

The ingredient listed above isnt in this. Its actually something ina totally different family. Ive checked it out.

By detox I meant give up booze and sweets!

    Ciara

What's the name of the stuff you're on? If you were to post up the ingredients I'm sure one of those who are smarter than me can tell you more.

We'd call giving up booze and sweets 'cleaning up your diet'. And cutting out empty calories like sweets and booze is always a good first step to a clean diet! Well done!

    Hi Folks,

I would advise anyone going to take this to do some research on the side effects (sometimes fatal) of Ephedra.

    Peace

I'll regret this iin the morning I'm sure, but several months ago I wrote a very spirited post with a definite anti-ephedra slant. I was wrong - I went off and I did the research and guess what...not a single provable death can be attriubuted to it. Not one.

Further more according to a study published by Forensic Science International, 139:61-69, 2004, The New York School of Medicine conduted a study examining all the records of all autopsies performed in the city and county of San Fransisco between 1994 and 2001 identifying 127 cases that showed trace amounts of Ephendrine drugs. They found only one remotely possible case of ephederine toxicity in all deaths that occurred in San Fransisco during that 7 year period.

Millions of people took ephedra related products during those 7 years. The study and many others just like it did not support the FDA's claim that ephedra posed a significant public health risk contrary to their 2004 ban ruling that ephedra could lead to a stroke, heart attack etc, for which no medical evidence has been presented.

For the record I do not endorse or recommend Ephedra based products or China Show etc. For the most part people who turn to such pills neither have the mental fortitude, self discipline or correct nutrional and exercise habits in place to achieve thier stated goals.

My porfessional advice - give up the crap, eat right, eat less and do a hell of a lot more. It's safe, effective, free and may even save you money by reducing the non essential crap in the average weekly shopping cart.

    All the best.

i have tried china show recently and have lost a stone already. you still feel hungry but only eat a tiny portion, eg half a banana for breakfast. no cravings for sweets of chocolate. i also tend to eat my meat first at dinner because i dont want to fill up on potatoes, then dont end up eatin potatoes at all. you may feel a slight dryness in your mouth but thats about it for side effects. oh and a little bit tired so on a day i have manual work on i dont take them. i think they are great, i just hope somebody does not find sometnihg wrong with them and i cannot take them anymore! c

They just haven't had a visit from the IMB yet obviously, who have probably been too busy raiding supplement shops.

Ephedrine slows down the rate of gastric emptying (i.e. how quick food gets through your stomach) and so your appetite basically dissappears. It also bombards your beta receptors, a little bit like speed, making you constantly pepped up, unable to sleep well and essentially incapable of complex thought.

seriosly i wouldnt take them again,be happy with your weight loss and leave it at that.as someone said above ephedra,an ingredient in them is illegal,so yes they are illegal.anything that makes you loose such rapid weight is not good for you or your body.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 199 ✭✭caspermccormack

Yeah, straight in the bin, being on them for two weeks, really dry mouth which lead to a sore throat, bad sleep, sweats and like a zombie at night, lost over a stone but much better to do it naturaly.

Hiya, Just want to let you all kno about china show from my experiences!! Heard about china show from a friend and was curious to try them out! went to the shop on augnier street(looked fairly dodgy)but to be honest id try anything if it claimed to make you loose weight so anyway ,, was really excited to start the next day and woke up got a glass of water and took my first purple tablet! And il tell ya ive never experienced anything like it , i had no APPETITE at all cud barely finish my weetabix it was mad,, so from then on i was steadily loosin weight think i lost about 14 pounds was feelin great!!! I never experienced any side effects but i know people around me experienced some side effects like goin to the toilet alot!! When you go into the shop and inquire about them the man hasnt got great english but told me that basicaly what they do is speed up metabolism, burn fat, give you energy and make your hair nice!! There apparently passed by the medical association or something!

The only thing negative i have to say is and this is the case wit my friend that used them i gained bak all the weight over time if not more but i dont know if that was the fact that once i lost the weight i got cocky and ddnt really pay attention to my diet!!
So any one got any questions feel free!!

BUT I JUST WANT TO SAY I HAVE READ THE OTHER POST AND SOME PEOPLE HAVE HAD SOME SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS SO IM NOT ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO TAKE THEM!!

Personaly i woudnt go bak on them cause you gain it bak eventually!!

I tried these early last year and they upset my stomach horribly :( The good news is I've learned not to try this faddish crap anymore...

In '85 my first ex-husband recommended this stuff to a friend of mine as a cheap, legal, alternative to dexadrine for a "rave" (well we weren't biblical characters y'know, we did naughty stuff). As she happens to be one of those people who takes an aspirin and is still tripping 3 days later, I was elected "guinea pig in chief".

I had a backlog of work I couldn't even look at at the time...but most of it was cleared by morning...and I didn't just THINK I had done it well either...I had...well that relieved me of the need to employ an assistant.

I was still getting the stuff brought down from the North to keep me awake on long night drives after it was taken off the market here, until they took it off the market in the UK too in '92.

I could never use it daily because I develop a tolerance to it very very fast, and after a few days use would have to take so much it gave me the shakes, made my skin erupt and my teeth would ulcerate and get loose but I took it regularly, over long periods.

Over time, it damaged my gums and teeth permanently, probably contributed to damaging my lungs, and gave me the temperament of a serial killer on crystal meth with a bad case of paranoia (which last, some people round here might claim to be sufficient improvement to be worth the risk, I admit :D).

I never noticed it making me lose weight...that wasn't why I took it, but it may have done...

Who cares? It nearly cost me my teeth...and any rudimentary sanity I may possess.

Looking at the accounts of how it actually works here, if anyone thinks it might also have contributed to my current (long term) metabolic problems too I am EXTREMELLY interested to know...

Just spotted this "trip down memory lane":
really dry mouth which lead to a sore throat, bad sleep, sweats and like a zombie at night

Still trying to figure out if there was any significant weight loss...but it seems to me I was actually far thinner in 82-83

Whats the deal with exercising on these?

I want to go about half a stone lighter - i am very fit, but i am planning on going on a clean bulking phase in the next few weeks- you tend to put on fat doing this as well - so by dropping to lower weight i might negate the problem

Whatever about the efficacy or danger of ephedra/ma huang, it definitely can change your mood. Many years ago I used to take it, both to lose weight and for the boost in the gym, but it made me unpleasantly aggressive. I would advise against it.

    P.

It's not ephedra, perhaps it used to be but I was offered a daily dose to try out recently and it's definitely nothing like ephedra, most likely some diuretic herbs as it suppresses your appetite slightly and you pee like crazy. Probably leads to a short term weight loss due to dehydration, all comes back once you're back to normal drinking/peeing routine.

    hey guys,
my god,all the fuss!me and my sisters and pretty much most of our friends have been taking these tablets on and off for over 5 years and they are just fantastic.
i know the chaps in the shop from being in all the time, they have been open for years,i think they are the oldest chinese herbal shop in ireland and i highly doubt they would be selling anything illegal or they would be well shut down by now!
no funny side affects altho one time i was desperate to drop the ould pounds quickly and took two and had to go to the loo a good bit but that was it.
in relation to the people that say they cant sleep,my sister asked and there is ginseng in these so its best not to drink a coffee wit them or you will be buzzing alright.
anyhow,i recommend them and from the amount of weight ive dropped the things are lifesavers.

You took slimming tablets, they made you go to the loo more and you lost weight. Lifesavers? Love the logic.

I don't know and can't find out what's in these tablets. Given that you can't get this in mass production I'm going to assume the worst and close this.
