Nero is my personal favourit, but its not reaslly thr program you are using that makes encoding faster, its down to your CPU.

I use Avi2Dvd and it works perfectly and it's free!

Nero wouldn't allow me to use subtitles, but other than that I was happy with it.
Avi2Dvd comes with tons more options, several different encoders, and works with other formats as well, like ogm and mkv.

This is the official home page:
    http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAvi2Dvd.html

There's guide on the page, but you'll also find the on other sites, I think I used the one from afterdawn.

It lets you set up multiple languages, multiple subtitles.. the works

Found the guide I was using:
    http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/avi_to_dvd_avi2dvd.cfm

And your comment about the time it takes.. Well, if you have an older PC I wouldn't be surprised that it takes 24h or more. It takes a powerful PC to do it quickly, and even then you're talking hours not minutes :)

Wow, you'd be lucky if it only takes 24h on that PC :)

You picked one of the most CPU-intensive tasks, so without some serious upgrade I don't think you'll see much of an improvement.
