Em....well not a freak accident but a sledge hammer did drop off a scaffolding and miss my head by about an inch.

I had a "final destination" moment while wrapping presents at Christmas. Holding about 15 CD's in one hand the one in the middle slipped and went flying across the room. As I reached out to try and catch it (was kneeling on the floor at the time) my other hand came down on the end of a scissors which was half on and half off the desk. The scissors took off and the pointy end stuck in my head about half an inch over my right eye. That was kind of cool.

I had a hairy experience with a PTO on a tractor a few years ago. I was spraying crops when the PTO disconnected from the sprayer and began to rotate like a helicopter propeller. It smashed the glass all round the cab while I couched down trying to reach the engine stop button. I was uninjured but was miles from anyone and could have been there for days if anything had happened.

    *takes deep breath*
Had a bolt of lightning miss me by about a foot when I was sixteen.
    Got malaria twice in Zambia.
Went ass over tits down a steep set of stairs and rammed my head into the bit between the glass sheets, a couple of inches either side and I was clean through the glass, as it was I was lucky to come away with a split skull.
Freak gust of wind knocked the microlight I was flying sideways, managed to level it out about 100ft from the ground, about two seconds at the rate we were falling.
Fell 25ft out of a tree and missed being impaled on a sharp broken branch that was sticking vertically out of the ground by 1 inch.
Oh, and I was bitten by a penguin in Dublin zoo once, (emotionally) scarred for life.
There's loads more but I've had so many bangs to the head that I have difficulty remembering the rest :)

Thanks to my Dad's botched attempt of wiring an extension cable, I picked up the live end of the cable that should have been dead. Thankfully I had my other hand on a metal radiator that was earthed so current went right thru me.

Gave me quite a shock. Excuse the pun.

I wouldn't breath so deeply Roan, you could hurt yourself.
I had loads of nearly's when I worked as a courier, slid under cars, got hit by cars, the usual stuff. My most frightening happened on the quays, overtaking two HGV's, one on my left, one on the right, they began to close me in. I got away with it but my underpants were never the same again.

    Had a few things happen!!

On a Banana boat and it went further out than it should have, everyone got thrown off and as the speed boat was coming back I hit my head on the underneath of it and the blades just missed my head but I got a few cuts on my arms and legs from it!!

Had a fire extinguisher blasted in my face with the powder that soaks up the oxygen and I was rushed to hospital cos I couldn't breath!

Then got a mental electric shock while I was working in a shop once, thing made my fingers sizzle a bit, smell of burnt skin was horrible!!

Ah it's all coming back now. I stuck my hand in the back of an iron once (the sellotape that was holding the back on lost its stickiness and the back came loose) and got a right old frying. During one of the spasms I somehow flung the thing away right as my mum came running, the only reason she didn't get a hot iron straight to the face was the the lead ran out of slack and the plug held it short of her....I nearly took the both of us out in the one go that time :o

3 teenagers out of their heads on something tried to ram us off a motorway outside London one night... maybe 20 years ago now. They were in a Ford Capri... while we were in a Mini. Minding our own business (2 A.M.) and they come up behind us... overtake slowly and then suddenly swerve towards us! Only that our driver was on the ball. They started playing cat and mouse then... slowing down to a crawl... speeding up... they tried a few times to ram us. There was nowhere to get off. When we finally did and called the cops they said we were the 3rd caller to report them for that behavior.

4 near fatal car crashes, but the freakiest think that heppened was when i was 13 or 14.
i was with a friend on a tree lined avenue and we met a girl. talked to her for a while and the conversation turned to the occult and ouija boards in particular. after a while, we got up and began to walk back down the avenue. suddenly a 3 foot wide branch dropped from a tree no more than 12 inches in front of us. my friend ran, but the girl and i were frozen in the one spot. we were convinced it had something to do with all the occult talk. looking back now, it was just a coincidence. actually, no. it was sort of inevitable. there were gale force winds that day.

Got septicemia from a tiny cut to the head in a car crash when i was 2 and nearly died coz no one noticed. Got an inflatable rubber ring caught around my ankles and nearly drowned. Also the old faithful icy road bike and incoming truck bike slid underneath a stopped against a tyre

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,818 ✭✭✭✭The Hill Billy

2 crashes - Was front seat passenger both times...

    1. Some gobsheen pulled out from side road into our path. My mate driving had to move out to avoid him (no other option). Oncoming taxi turning into side road hit us head on. Nobody seriously hurt.

    2. Mates car hit large rock in middle of road (at night - didn't see it until last minute). Car flipped onto roof & slid for around 30 yards. Neither of us hurt.

Almost drowned in pool on hols as a kid.

Couple of near misses with electrics & stuff. Thank God for rubber boots & wooden step ladders!

Wierd'st thing ever, I was shivering and crawled up in a ball. I could hear people over me in shock asking if I was ok, nudging me etc, trying to wake me up. But no matter how hard I tried I could not open my eyes.
I came around after 10 minutes.
Thats a day Ill never forget.

cracked my head going down rapids in a river and was washed up (luckily), was found wandering2 hours later. regained actual awareness 4 hours after that.
head on car-jeep collision, rated at 70 mph. thankfully i was in the jeep and had braked heavily which in effect saves our lives.
another car crash. friend too fast into a corner. rolled three time. both unhurt barr a deep cut on my finger.

When I was a kid I was flying down this hill near where I live on my BMX. The road was recently re-surfaced so there was a build up of gravel at the sides. I heard someone call me from behind so I looked back. When I looked forward again I realised the bike was gone and I was just flying through the air. Serious Matrix/bullettime moment. I slid down the hill face first for about 5 feet in all this gravel. I can't remember anything after hitting it, but sometimes I think I get flashes of being held over the neighbours kitchen sink trying to make me puke up gravel. Two black eyes and lips like bubba shrimp's. Still have the scarrs but they've faded. You wouldn't really notice less I pointed them out.

Last year I got cellulitice (not cellulite  ) in my ankle. Thought it was just a bruise at the time. Didn't get it checked out for a week. Crept up my thigh and then my foot swelled up like a balloon. Still not quite right. I was out of action for over 2 months.

None of these were really life threatening I guess, but my biggest close escape belongs in the paranormal forum I think..... ;)

now you won't belive this but:

I nearly died on mars right bear with me here. My stone age rocket landed but our suits weren't air tight, so, when my buddy jumpped down to the surface he died and i was choking I managed to close the rocket door and fly back to earth.

I was so angry I wiped out the entire advanced stone age race with my fury. Funny thing is Nostradamus predicted the whole thing, well that my buddies skull would be found on the 5th month in 2006 mad but true.

(or maybe i've read AH threads so much I've taken on them as my life)

About 3 years ago someone tried to murder me by stabbing.

Survival instinct is a great thing though and I was able to get the knife off them and subdue them until assistance arrived and I could get to a hospital. I'd lost a lot of blood by that stage and didn't actually go into shock until I was on a hospital bed in A&E.

    Munich, Germany

Was living there fore the summer and I cant remember the name of the main river running through it but we (me n friends)were in it floating down towards the city centre - but we came up to some rapids, everyone seemed to go through them no problem except me - I got dragged and tossed and turned and spat out the other side eventually...thought I was a goner and never got in that river again!

Nearly drowned in the railway bridge when i was 2.

Split my head open when i fell on the cardboard that they put down in the local shop to soak up wet floor. Skidded and my head smashed against the counter.

bull**** I find it hard to believe that after getting stabbed bad enough to warrent an ambulance journey to AE that you were physically able to subdue a perfectly healthy attacker and actually hold him there until the police came

was climbing onto a spike fence to see if i could get some height and slpipped, the part with the spike clipped my eye lid and cut it, but nearly went through my eye, kinda like impaling my head.

I done kinda the same thing:( There was a metal grate laying up on the fence and I thought it was better attached, so after getting someway up there, felt the grate coming loose. Then first I fell and then the grate came crashing on my head, ouchies.

When I was about 6, I went down one of the waterslide type things, but half way down the chute, for some reason, I spun around in the slide, and ended up going down backwards into the 12' deep pool. I can't swim, so I just went straight under. It was actually fairly surreal, as all I remember thinking was 'hey cool, I can see underwater!'. I was down on the bottom of the pool for a bit, before I was dragged out by the lifeguard.

I was stabbed once in the chest.

If I hadn't subdued them, then I'd have been stabbed again and I'd have been dead. If you haven't been in that sort of situation then you really can't comment on how strong the survival instinct is. I had to pin this person up against a wall for over 10 minutes before someone else came along, all the while knowing that I was losing a lot of blood.

I never said I got an ambulance either... I was stayed pretty calm about the whole affair, I got a lift to the hospital and walked into A&E on my own two feet. Luckily you don't have to have to wait when you have lots of blood pumping out of you and they rushed me inside... it was only then that I let go and my body went into shock.

Luckily none of my internal organs were ruptured, but having the surgeon stick his finger inside the wound to check was a very unpleasent experience.

At least I know I can handle myself fairly well in a critical situation though...

I've been in a few car crashes. In one case the arse of the car spun out and my mate lost control of the car for about 15 seconds, he eventually stopped it at the edge of a 150 - 200ft drop on the Kerry - Cork road. The two back wheels were out over the edge.

In another case I broke my back in a crash, if I was 5 inches taller I'd have been beheaded. I don't really want to go into that.
