in wellington, new zealand at the moment, and was in the cinema last night at 10.45pm local time. then suddenly everything started rattling for about 3 minutes. thought it was just a small quake/tremor as they happen all the time. i havent noticed any before because they've all been so small ( richter 5 or less ). anyway, this one was a richter 7.6, located 600 km off the coast of north new zealand. scary stuff, lucky there was no tsunami or anything

Hullo Conky :) Being from the same part of the world as yerself im not used to these tremors either. Did you not fell the stronger one at 5:30ish on monday morning?

That one was only 40km from porirua out to sea.

Last night was over 1000km away but there was still a decent rumble. Lounder than my stomach! Was 7.5 apparently.

Been two off the coast last week hope there isnt a big one on the way/!

By stronger I meant its strength and proximity to us than the one last night.

    7.5 is a major quake.
    Earthquake Classification
    Magnitude Classification
    0 - 3 Micro
    3 - 3.9 Minor
    4 - 4.9 Light
    5 - 5.9 Moderate
    6 - 6.9 Strong
    7 - 7.9 Major

I was referring to a major earthquake happening a lot closer to Wellington.
