    Hello,

I was wondering if there is any legislation regarding the wearing of bicycle helmet whilst cycling? Can I find this online or does anyone have a link to where this might be stated?

    Cheers.

You can look at http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/front.html (searches the entire database of statutes from 1922-2003)

...quick search, couldn't find any specific legislation dealing with it...

There appears to be no legal requirement.

In other jurisdictions, it has been found that mandatory helmet requirements have had a negative effect on numbers cycling and therefore higher numbers driving. Driving is twice as dangerous as cycling.

In general, helmets will prevent certain head injuries but may cause different neck injuries. I choose to wear a helmet.

here, a cyclist riding on a human propelled vehicle is not required to wear any form of head protection although, of course, you really should...

a couple of years ago I fell off when cycling in that hard shoulder when suddenly I ran over a crater in the road where some roadworks group had dug a channel across the road, they had filled in the section driven over by cars with compacted stones (a nice job actually) but had left the hard should bit empty, I hit my head on the metal barrier on the left, but was fortunately wearing a helmet, so I dusted my self off and never mentioned the incident again, I'm just saying this as an example illustrating that any cyclist can fall off, and a helmet is priceless
