I just wanted the low down on heel hooks, are they that dangerous? I thought they would have allowed them in the advanced division last saturday.
But I suppose not much people would do them anyway so it's better not to take the risk.

Is it because the knee is the worst possible joint to get damaged?
I saw a horrible video on YouTube of Ken Shamrock tearing some young guys knee off, it was nasty. Then I heard Bas Rutten say the were banned in pancrase because Ken was hurting too much people with them.

The problem with submissions that involve the knee is this: if you can feel the pain (in the knee) - it's too late to tap.

So, in the main, it's not allowed in competition.

That vid was vicious alright, IIRC there wasn't even a question of tapping - he just snapped his knee in a flash. Scumbag.

Its the injury problem really. Like Shane said, once you feel the pain its probably because your knee ligaments are suffering damage, unlike say, a knee bar where you feel "pressure" and are able to tap before any damage is done.

I think heel hooks are fine, once they are trained in the right enviornment with the right mind frame. Problems only occur when people do them too hard or the victim doesn't know how to defend and rolls into the lock rather than away from it. THat is usually how accidents with heel hooks happen.

    Peace

Well that poses obvious problems! I've had a few put on me in training but I knew to tap as soon as I felt it was on tight rather than pain (such as a kimura)

And also some clubs don't train leg locks so if they got a heel hook on them it has a high chance of ending nastily.

    Cheers

Lehhg lohhccks eez cheeep, my frien', cheeep!

Seriously though, most people that I saw were making mistakes with the leg locks that were easier to train, so god knows what would have happened if heel hooks were allowed!
