Bloated Belly

    Hey,

I know this isn't a health forum, but I have the feeling that the problem could be diet related.
No matter how much or how little I eat I cant seem to shift my bloated stomach. The bloatedness comes hand in hand with a horrible, painful windy feeling between my rib cage.
I was just wondering if anyone could suggest anything that might relieve this.
Its there every day and is really uncomfortable, and can often make me feel as though I need to vomit, or gag.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

Sounds a little like IBS to me have you ever had it checked out ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,563 ✭✭✭connundrum

No never, but I have felt like this for about a month now, it is really starting to bother me as every single day I feel sick.
I may get it checked out if it doesn't sort itself out pretty soon.

Post your current diet in detail for a better answer

A few years back I had symptoms very similar to those you describe. It was a period when my diet was fairly poor and I was under a lot of work related stress. I always felt this was related to some form of stomach Ulcer. If this continues to persist please seek proper medical assistance but for what its worth the following worked for me:

    1) Eat regular healthy meals. The important thing was to eat regularly - sometime I felt so sick that I didnt feel like eating but even then eating a proper meal actually made me feel better.

    2) Cut down on fast food and sugary foods as much as possible.

    3) NB NB NB Avoid Alcohol. Sorry but this was the real killer for me. Even one drink would guarantee me a sleepless night with a bloated stomach.

    4) Instant Relief: I discovered that 7-Up (not Sprite) is a wonder drug. In my worst moments a few sups of 7-up gave me instant relief. Rennys or other antacids also helped but I never liked taking too many of those.

The good news is that a few months of healthy eating soon sorted me out and I can enjoy a few beers without suffering now.

On the other hand there is s another thread about exactly this problem:

    Mmm, some good advice there.
I hadn't even considered IBS before but you could be onto something.
With regard to my diet, at the moment its a little all over the place. Like the above poster mentioned, some days I don't feel like eating at all, and I almost always feel full.
When I do eat it is generally healthy enough. Home made dinners, that kinda thing.

    1) Food combine..

Carbohydrates (Starches) need alkaline stomach juices to digest, Proteins need acidic juices.
When alot of both are consumed in the one meal, both acidic & alkaline stomach juices are produced, neither food is digested very well leading to fermentation & bloating.
Also, eat in order of ease of digestion.
Always eat Melon first (goes through you, little digestion), Any other fruits after, fats & proteins after again. Otherwise, the faster digesting will ferment on the slower food holding it up.

    http://www.innerself.com/Health/food_combining.htm

    2) Don't drink whilst/for an hour after eating. It dilutes digestive enzymes stagnating digestion. Drink 30mins before eating.

    3) Soak beans/grains and cook well in lots of water for a good period. Throw water away and rinse in strainer.

    4) Eat more raw fruit & veg generally. These have some of the digestive enzymes in them for their digestion as well as higher quantities of vits+minerals to improve your overall health.

    5) One thing I've discovered, after years of stomach pains and bloatedness, is my intolerance to dairy products.
Give up milk/cheese for a week and see how you fare. Pasteurised milk has had its enzymes (mainly lactase) destroyed during the process and most of us have limited ability to break down lactose due to the body not producing much/any lactase. These sugars are left to ferment, rotting other foods.

    6) Watch out for gluten intolerance in yourself. It is very common. We rely too much on wheat & other gluten grains to make up our caloric needs and these can destroy your gut. Brown Rice & Potatoes are good replacements.
A complete avoidance of gluten for a period is well worth a try.
I keep to it most of the time myself as I am slightly sensitive to it..

Go to a doctor. Nobody here can be sure what's wrong with you.

GI diet, do this, but as others have suggested get the doc to check for food allergies - too much bran makes me crazy bloated but a little less helps keep me regular, all about balance :)

Try cutting out bread and dairy for a few days, wouldn't be suprised at all if the bloatedness went away.

hi there again, just to agree what one or two others said, avoid wheat products, dairy products, fizzy drinks and beer.
I've the same problem for years and have been to doctors and consultants and been tested for everything and was told food intolerance.
Try drinking peppermint tea, it eases bloating.
    Hope this helps :)
