Installation problem

I am trying to install a VC poker client but am having a lot of difficulty.

It has been previously installed on my system with no problems but I uninstalled so I could study for exams!

Anyway, I have downloaded the latest version of the installation software but every time I try to run it, the program instantly freezes and I have to kill it. Sometimes I can't kill it and have to switch off the machine.

I have checked my firewall and "clientinstall.exe" is definitely allowed.

I have contacted VC support and this is the reply I got. It's quite long winded and basically just tells me how to adjust Norton or McAfee. I use a progaram called "Kaspersky Anti-Hacker".
Quote:
Many thanks for your e-mail regarding software problems.

To resolve this issue please follow the steps below.

* Uninstall the poker client if previously installed.

* Download the latest drivers for you graphic card (can be found at the
manufacturers website)

* Visit <http://www.windowsupdate.com> to keep your computer up to date with the
latest Service Packs and patches from Microsoft.

* Check the settings of any internet security software you may be running to
ensure it is not blocking out software. (Windows XP service pack 2 re-activates
the built in Microsoft firewall).

Where to locate Internet Security Software:

1. Click on Start and then Control Panel.
2. You will have one of two control panels. Click on the Security Centre
icon.
3. Click on the Windows Firewall icon beneath the status updates.
4. In this drop down list there be the standard windows firewall that is
downloaded with service pack 2 (The Windows Firewall will not be a cause of the
problem; this software is provided free of charge from windows update). There
will normally be another firewall, usually well known products such as “Norton’s
Personal Firewall or MacAfee’s personal firewall”.

How to unblock programs in Norton Internet Security after selecting block and
checking "Always use this action"
Situation:
You blocked a program's access to the Internet by selecting block and checking
"Always use this action" in a Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal
Firewall alert message.

Solution:
You must remove this program from the blocked list to give it access to the
Internet.

To remove a program from the blocked list
Double-click the Norton Internet Security icon.
Double-click Personal Firewall.
On the Programs tab, select the program that you want to unblock in the Manual
Program Control window.
Click Remove.
Click OK to any warning messages.
If there are other components of the program that appear in the list, remove
them as well.
Click OK to close the Program Control window.
Close Norton Internet Security.
You have unblocked the program. The next time that the program tries to access
the Internet, the alert should appear. Then you can choose the access privileges
that you want for the program.

MacAfee how do I change the access permissions of an application?
Summary: This article explains how to set the permission level for each
application that requests Internet access.
Product Versions
Personal Firewall Plus 6
Changing permissions
To change a permission level:
Right-click the McAfee icon, point to Personal Firewall, then click Internet
Applications.

In the Permissions list, right-click the permission level for an application,
and choose a different level:
Click Allow Full Access to allow the application to both send and receive data.

Click Outbound Access Only to prevent the application from receiving data.

Note: Once the computer is rebooted, the permission level will revert back to
Allow Full Access. If you want the application access level to be outbound
traffic only, it is recommended that you change the security level to Tight
Security. For information on security levels, click here.

Click Block This Application to prevent the application from sending or
receiving data.

Note: Previously blocked applications continue to be blocked when the firewall
is set to the Open security setting or Disabled. To prevent this from occurring,
you can either change the application's permissions to Full Access or simply
delete the blocked permission rule in the Permissions list.

To delete a permission level:
Right-click the McAfee icon, point to Personal Firewall, then click Internet
Applications.
In the Permissions list, right-click the permission level for an application,
and click Delete Application Rule.
The next time the application requests Internet access, you can set its
permission level to re-add it to the list.

Then follow the next few steps, this should be all you need to get through to
the new upgraded version of the poker software.

* Go to TOOLS from your Web browser, select INTERNET OPTIONS and then from the
GENERAL tab, under Temporary internet files, DELETE COOKIES and or DELETE FILES,
and then APPLY.

* Go to "My Computer" - open WINDOWS file - open Plyr Stats - Delete plyr names

* RESTART/REBOOT PC

* Download the latest poker client: http://www.vcpoker.com/clientinstall_cd.exe

* Install the poker client

Should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Any ideas how I could resolve this?

Thanks

They cut and paste that to anyone who says they have a software problem. Send an email back to VC and tell them it's not one of the problems they outlined in the email, and would they mind asking a tech guy to read what you wrote the first time.

Also there are some other installers for VC that might work, try the one from vcstudentpoker.com, also I think sparky1808 has a link to one in his sig, also there is one called something like clientinstall_cd.exe that you can ask VC support for a link to it. One of these might work for you.

Did you do a custom uninstall or standard the first time? You may be holding conflicting files on your PC that is causing it to freeze. Run a search for all subsequent files and remove them, reboot and reinstall.
