Haha, that was hilarious, we thought they were doin it simply for the crack at one stage.

Great event, my first tournament so it was crazy. I thought it would be like rolling at class, man was I wrong!

It was funny coz I always thought that the 'JudoMick' guy was, well a judo expert, but obviously is a bjj expert too!

    Looking forward to September

A big thanks to you Colm and all the guys involved in running another super smooth event, I know exactly the headaches these things can produce. With Colm running a second event in September, I am going to organise a team one in July at NG Dublin in Loughlinstown along with a possible Chris Brennan Seminar, Details to be released but it will be more inter club and team based and on a smaller scale with a kind of Ryder Cup twist :D
Big congrats to all competitors, the atmosphere was great and especially to the NG crew who hauled home 4 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze, now you know why fight class is so hard!

Great event. Really high standard of grappler there, and in great quantity, on FA Cup Final day!

Competition is great because it gives you a kick in the behind as to what you need to train and improve, and how much you have improved too. 6 months ago I wouldn't have been able to compete in the clinch, full stop. Yesterday I was pleased enough with my performance standing, though it still needs a lot of work. HOWEVER, my ROCK PAPER SCISSORS performance was awful.:D Who picks paper?:D

My thanks to Colm for the excellent and smooth organisation and for the kids event which was second to none in terms of how kids competitions should be run.

Thanks for the kind words guys, though like I said a lot of kudos is due to Jim, he kept well on top of things.

For those who don't know about the Rock-Paper-Scissors division we split that into two pools, top two going through to the semi finals. But we had three tied at the top, so we ran takedown matches. All three got one takedown each!

Unfamiliar as people are with odds-and-evens, JK decided on rock paper scissors, the only official way of settling an argument in our sport.
OWEVER, my ROCK PAPER SCISSORS performance was awful. Who picks paper?

Good old rock, nothing beats that!

Elytron, I can't access that site so I can't comment.

One more thing, the Lightsbaer tournament seemed to go down a treat. The force is indeed strong in these younglings.

Most definitely twisting the knee. Very nicely done too, I might add...

i was watching this match and my first instinct was that it was a twisting knee lock, but after a few discussions my opinion changed, Conor tried to go to the back and i think it was more the movement of conor than that of stefan which led to the injury, i couldnt see that clearly but i cant see stefan applying any pressure whereas you can see conor moving in a way which would twist his knee, i havent spoke to conor but maybe he can add a little to what exactly he felt?

Firstly, well done to everyone who competed and thanks to Colm, Jim and everyone else for organising it.

I think when I sat up and grabbed the head to defend the achilles lock my knee got twisted.

Oh and for anyone who was wondering that noise you hear 8 seconds into the video is my knee.

Can see the logic there. Still, very nicely done.

    Quick question: what's afaik?

i was rite at the mat when that happened it looked pretty painful, i have stacks of photos from yesterday but havent a clue as to how to get them up

best divison of the day was the advanced -92kg as my training partner Paul cleaned house including his brother lol, nearly every fight had a great finish and there was some great grappling on show

i competed for the first time in the rookie heavyweight divison, 2 loses 2 draws, not bad, no one could take me down and it kept going to a coin toss and i kept losing the toss and ended up on the bottom, were im still pretty useless, lol wasnt my lucky day, even John who was reffin the fights said that lol

all in all a great day and can't wait till september

p.s, my training partners told me that there was guys from last year who didnt move up a divison, i.e. my mate paddy o doherty fought in an advanced divison, and a fella he grappled in the tournament the year before was still fighting in the intermediate, i didnt think that was fair

Got to see the video clip, from what it looks like Conor applied the twisting pressure to his knee.
when does a foot look become a twisting knee lock? When the person feels their knee twisting? how does a referee know when that happens? so what happens if you put pressure onto your own knee trying to escape a foot lock?

If you try to escape a straight achilles lock by rolling you apply twisting pressure to your own knee. If you try to roll laterally (say your right leg is under attack and you roll to the right) you apply more pressure than rolling medially. A ref can spot when twisting pressure is being applied by the attacker. If you put pressure on your knee while trying to escape you're not escaping properly essentially. It's almost akin to someone stacking you in a triangle and you complaining of having a sore neck afterwards, you had the option to release the triangle, or in the case of the footlock, tap out.

I used to hate footlocks, and can't do them worth a damn, but I allow my guys to train with them so they can deal with them. I make sure we do footlock defence classes more than footlock classes (v v rarely). I've shown them a twister once so they don't get caught in it, or accidentally put it on a spazzy newb.

Do you have names and I can check the records of the tournaments? Paddy fought in the 83Kg Advanced, correct? That was split into two pools.

Which 83Kg fighter was an advanced actually fighting intermediate?

    Thanks,

Yeah it was The Shane who did the rules.

I checked everyone who preregistered and I can't figure out who that is. Looking at the competition sheet for the 83Kg Beginner/Intermediate there's four names I don't recognise: Barry Still; Ross O'Neill; Charles Fleming; and Brian Fury. If you have a photo please post it, or if anyone can identify these guys please let me know.

Furthermore, if there are any other issues regarding the NSC please let me know.

    Colm

That's also me in The Shane's butterfly guard - I'd recognise that sexy ass anywhere :D

Well done to colm, jim and co on a well run competition. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,282 ✭✭✭Kent Brockman

Did some one (Phil i think) get disqualified for "talking"?

Saw the ref stand up the guys while doing a 'Kermit in the nude' impression and after consulting the 'universal sign language for refs almanac' , verified that said signing directly translates to human as :
"oi! less of that guff out of you mate!"

    So the question is :
Are competitors allowed to speak during a bout, (or was it just what he said/the way it was said):

I would imagine you CAN say:
    How longs left ref? or
    Good escape mate. But not:
Im gonna tear you a new A-hole!!!!

Can someone shed some light on this please.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

I can't speak for the NSC or the rules there, but generally talking in combat sports is viewed as unsporting behaviour. It depends on whether you have rules to enforce it. Obviously the NSC does!!!

I was fighting guy before an he was full of it, yapping to me the whole way through and he had a point taken off after continuing to do it. But that's in a points situation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

It's a rule we took from wrestling. You can joke and banter all you like until the round starts, after that it's down to the sport. Obviously communicating with the ref doesn't count as a breach of the rules.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

That's the best way. I don't like smart assing!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,282 ✭✭✭Kent Brockman

Guess that no talking is probably the best solution as then there is no debate over what can and can't be said.
Saw Herb dean warning two guys who were taunting each other while fighting and the commentator was very surprised as he didn't think that it was a rule in UFC.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

I remember Gary Goodridge shouting "childs play" at someone hitting him from top position too. That was in Pride.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 235 ✭✭The Shane

    excellent day.

My favorite fight- Tim Murphy vs. John Donnelly
My favorite memory- picking up John Donnelly
My least favorite memory- getting footlocked shortly after the pick up.

As for "judo" mick, that title is at this stage honorary, he is much more the jiu jitsu specialist.

The no talking rule is there to promote sportsmanship. I think it does this quite well, it falls under the remit of the Sportsmanly conduct rule that we introduced. It's much like the associated substances rule in doping legislation, if we don't like it and it's bad for the sport but did not specifically mention it we can still penalise you for it. With that in place though it is important that you have a forum to discuss it in, just in case one of the refs were to become power hungry.

Jim was the stone cold calm captain of a panicked ship in the middle of a storm. My hat goes off to him.

Clive, yes a sexy ass, but not nearly as sexy as the butterfly guard supporting it.

That first picture of me- pretty darn unflattering. Beautiful hair. My hat goes off to vinny for stepping up to the mark in that particular compettition (the hair comp).
