can someone explain a few disc related things to me please. Are there many differences between dvd-r and dvd+r discs? does one have higher quality/compatability than the other, more durable or suited to different uses? And dual layer discs, I find these are hard to come by, are they availbale in conventional shops and are there any specifics I should know about other than requiring a dual layer burner?

    any info much appreciated:D

/edit: fixed an awkward spelling mistake :P

I have found the DVD+ is more compatable with a greater number of DVD players. Too often I have seen friends having problems with playing DVD-, especially on the budget DVD players you get in Lidl, B&Q and the like.

My DVD+ burner is a gem (HP300) no problems and no coasters. I havn't found the dual layer to be any great shakes they are expensive and I have to question if they are worth it . Also the dual burner I have has not been great (Pioneer 110D). It has given a few problems especially with Alcohol 120.

    I stick with DVD+

There my thoughts for what its worth.

Im the opposite, I always had more sucess with DVD- especially in Playstations....

Just buy a Dual layer DVD +/- RW writer, and you can choose what works best for you.

Dual layer disks (DVD9) can store a whole film, so you dont have to compress it like you would if you were burning to a Single layer (DVD5)

The only reason that + and - were introduced was greed:mad:

And for backing up films, Any DVD using the ritek g04 or g05 dye are the best.

When the old DVD decrypter forum was up and running, these were the most talked about discs as they are cheap and reliable.......

And i find SVP have excellent service and the best choice of Media, They also have amazingly good prices on ink.....

yeah, compatabilty was never an issue with dvd+r for me, but ive never used dvd-r. im looking for dual layer discs for exactly that reason, i hate compressing movies, lossy burns are not worth it imho. fortunatley im very happy with my burner:D (NEC ND-3550), hopefully ill stay happy after burning onto dual layers. Thanks for the advice guys, and for the link conzy, vvery nice prices. Am I wrong that there is some sort of difference in the way the two formats store data? conzy can u explain the term dye
