Absolutely not, not a chance in hell of me buying this. I'm very happy with my 360 so I'm not changing/trading it.

Lord no. I made this mistake when I bought the PS2 at launch.

Unless there's half a dozen games that I cannot wait to play at launch, and I highly doubt this, I won't buy it until it's reasonably priced. Considering the use my current consoles get, a wii would be a much more sensible option for me.

€600 is way too much for a games console... I think I can wait for the first price drop... I didn't get a PS2 until about half way though it's life and I only got an Xbox last year...

Got a 360 at launch... possibly not the brightest idea... it gets very little use.

I will get the Wii at launch though... I do enjoy Zelda and Metroid a lot...

    No way.

Hopefully I'll get enough money toghter over the summer to get a Wii and a 360 if they get a price drop.

Meh - I have me pc and i'm happy but every time i see a premium 360 in stock in virgin, xtra vision or what have you I always seriously consider it...Its 400 quid. 4 nights out which I'd now happily spend in with the 360..but..

every time, do you know what stops me? having to go and spend 1000+ on a decent HDTV to play it on. (I'm a sucker for wanting it perfect)..I don't see the 360 as €409 - i see it as €1409...

(And i've a 22" crt monitor with dual inputs that I could use - but console = couch...need a tv)

I'm completely broke now, but will be working during the summer. I prob will buy a Wii, but am not quite sure about a PS3. If they put a fully fledged version of Linux on it then definitely yes, because It would then be the equivalent of buying a PC worth a couple of grand for 600, which also happened to play some really cool games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,284 ✭✭✭RobertFoster

I didn't think about it like that when I heard the price. I thought, wow, €600 for a console. I didn't think console + games + HDTV (remember when this used to be just a memory card?).

I don't have the money, and I'm not going to buy another Sony console at launch like I did with the PS2.... Unless of course there'll be mad shortages and I'll make a killing on eBay. Damn ethics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,585 ✭✭✭honru

Fuck no, but I can always prepare.

Yet the PS3 doesn't look like it's going to have that killer launch lineup... harks back to when the PS2 was originally released in 2000.

I think as a rule, I will no longer buy consoles in the launch period. Even getting a DS was risky when I bought one in 2004. While I mainly got it for the GBA capabilities, the only decent DS game available was... a remake of Super Mario 64. That was poor judgement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

I bought a CD32 at launch... what on Earth was I thinking?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,441 ✭✭✭✭jesus_thats_gre

I could afford it if I wanted it but I will be waiting to see what happens.. I bought the 360 at launch and will be buying the Wii though..

Heh heh, to admit buying a 360 at launch is like standing up and introducing yourself at an AA meeting (I'm one of them). Big mistake, I shouldn't have bought one; a very underwhelming console, it's hardly been used (even when I bought the magical Oblivion *cough* Morrowind 1.5 *cough*)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,396 ✭✭✭✭kaimera

    it's a playstation

    360+Wii is very inviting tbqh.

The PS3 isn't just a games console, it'll also play HD DVD's and Blu-Ray disc, plus the €600 model comes with a 60GB hard drive, you're future proofing yourself. I have the money to get one, but I'm not bothered, much rather get a Wii.

Unless of course the PS3 launch titles are must have's, like MGS4.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 261 ✭✭Reaver772

I can see myself shelling out €600 to get it at launch then taking it back home and immediatly flogging it on ebay. Almost guaranteed to make €100-200 which will practically pay for a Wii. Tempting, very tempting!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,639 ✭✭✭Laguna

Seems to be a popular decision for people regarding the PS3 and its launch, buying one just to make a profit on eBay!. There does seem to be an awful lack of hype surrounding the PS3 despite it being the new 'cutting edge' Sony console, maybe what I said is true?, maybe the price is just too ridiculous (not factoring in the obligatory HDTV if you don't have one, who'g going to want to shell out €600 on a PS3 to play on a 14" Philips?).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,653 ✭✭✭steviec

Well I've become a chronic early adopter recently, I got my 360 at launch, I got my DS and PSP at their respective Japanese launches. I did plan to get both the Wii and PS3 at launch but 600 is a hell of a lot to pay. I really have to see how things pan out. I definitely intend to own a PS3 at some point in the future but there may be other things more worthy of 600 euro at its launch.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,266 ✭✭✭Rnger

I bought a CD32 at launch... what on Earth was I thinking?

the same could be said for any console

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

the second poll option is exactly what came into my head when i read this thread title:p
the maximum i'm willing to spend is €400, and i expect to get at least an extra controller and game for that money (*looks at Wii hopefully)
€600 is ****ing stupid money to be paying to play a few games, even €400 seems a little insane.
by the time Resi5 and GTA4 come out (imo, the only 2 must have titles outside of the Wii's lineup), the PS3 and 360 should hopefully both be a bit more affordable.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,249 ✭✭✭✭Kinetic^

Anybody know how much the games are gonna be for the thing?
The games for the 360 are expensive enough, I can only imagine that these things are gonna be worse!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,836 ✭✭✭Vokes

Have the money, but probably won't shell out until the like of MGS4/FFXIII come out.

Besides, I have enough to keep me going on the PS2 (FFXII, DragonQuest, Resi4) and DS and PC

    The PS3 doesn't play HD-DVD's and MGS4 is out in 2007. ;)

As we're both gamers I get to split all these type of costs (well, except for PCs, couldn't live with one PC for both of us tbh), but still... 600?

Unless the launch titles are reeaally good, I probably won't get it until the price drops a bit, but we shall see. Have a 360 and I'll be getting a Wii, PS3 will really depend on what titles it'll have.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Unless there's something of Mario 64 proportions at launch I won't be getting one until there is a significant price drop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,437 ✭✭✭Crucifix

If I did some good saving this summer I could do...but I'll probably wait til next year, and hopefully some price drops. Might buy a DS lite to tide me over if they hit sometime soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,211 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Gta 4 isn't out for over a year then? Wouldn't be rushed into buying any console before then. I'll see what they're like around that time and can see myself getting a 360 because of Sony's ridiculous price.

Actually does the 360 support wifi out of the box? I've seen wireless adapters for them on sale for over €80 but am wondering if that is for both systems or just for the core system. I wouldn't bother getting a console without wifi so if it comes as standard on the ps3 and not on the 360 then I'd be alot less likely to get a 360.

The Wireless adapter is extra for both of the 360 systems.

Yes. will be getting this on launch day, put off getting the 360(wont till MS drop the price-prob the wk PS3 comes out >bastards! :(:D )

only thing that would stop day1 purchase is shag all AAA titles out ?:|
....who am i kidding! Im getting the wonga version on launch.
    :)
EDIT! how is this different to the 360 +1 game (€600+)?
(not the stupid version btw (Core))

We have a 360 in the house, my brother bought it. I will probably get a Wii on launch day and pick up a PS3 after the first price drop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,744 ✭✭✭deRanged

I could buy one, but I won't. Maybe when the price has dropped a good bit.

I'll buy a Wii first chance I get.

I will buy it before the end of 2007, but i already have a 360, and the ps3 is retardly priced. 360 is a better option tbh, its €200 cheaper, it will have gta, and it has live!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭projectmayhem

i have a 360 and good PC right now. i don't have €600 floating around to buy a ps3. but because sony announced it now, i can work over the summer and save for it. i bet millions of people are thinking the exact same thing too.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I think that the high price point will effectively price the system out of the younger generation market. The people who can afford it will be 20 or above and this is a small market compared to kids and teenagers. I'd say that Nintendo and Microsoft with their affordable system will clean up this market.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 711 ✭✭✭BOHSBOHS

if memory serves the ps2 was fairly expensive at launch too
    (roughly 500 euro ?)
until they were suddenly able to reduce their "costs" and the price just before the competition came out!;) ( same thing will happen with the xbox360 this time around)

    ill be buying the wii!!!

I can see parents being hassled this Christmas to a certain extent and there are enough fools waiting to be parted with their money at little Billy/Jonny/Marys behest, that said it'll be 2007 before it really impacts on the Christmas market.
The very fact that a PS3 id out will damage 360 sales, folks are simply too happy with their PS2s, what with another GTA about to pop up, God Of War and doubtless another iteration or two of Fifa, no reason to spring for the 360 and simply wait til the PS3 is cheaper, precisely what happened to the DC, folk were convinced that something better was around the corner amd they stayed away from the format in their droves.
With a 3 year old I just don;t have the finance to buy both the Wii and the PS3 and I simply believe that the Wii will offer a sufficiently different gaming experience and I already have a 360.
If the launch line up of the PS3 is awesome I will probably just sell a kidney and buy one but I ahve never been a big fan of the later MGS titles and Killzone sucked the first time, they had better start impressing me sometime soon.

The other thing is that with interest rates and folks watching their pennies a little closer than last year it may make folk think a little harder before digging deep this Christmas, perhaps, as Retrogamer has said, the more affordable but new systems from Ninty and MS will be more attractive.

My question is will the Wii be doomed to be labelled as a kids machine, as the 'cube was before it?

True the 360 will prolly price drop, but I still think €400 is a fair price tbh. now €600 is takin the piss, I dont care if it has an extra 40GB, it's online service will find it difficult to rival xbox live at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,682 ✭✭✭LookingFor

I might try to buy one for me, and one for ebay, and perhaps the latter will cover the cost of both ;)

But seriously, yeah, I have €600 for the PS3. I'm dying for HD movies for my projector, and having a PS3 and a Blu-ray player wrapped into one for that price makes it quite good value when you want that hd player.

More info about pre orders from http://www.gamestation.co.uk/

    # The £20 deposit comes off the price of the console, so you'll be paying £404.99 when you get it.
    # The £20 deposit is refundable.
    # The deposit is exactly £20. No more, no less.
    # The price of the PS3 may change, however you'll never have to pay more than the £404.99. If the price goes up, GameStation will honour the original price. If it goes down, you'll get the console at the cheaper price.
    # Games are prices between £49.99 and £54.99.
    # GameStation cannot garauntee when you'll get your machine, but it is on a company wide first come, first served basis.
    # Only the black 60gb version is available in the UK at launch.

I know they're are only early prices but €75 - €80 a game and only the €600 version available on launch.

EDIT: The Wii is the new name for the revolution Nintendo's new console. http://wii.nintendo.com/
