Problems with new internal hard drive

Hey, wondering if anyone can help me!

bought a Hitachi Deskstar PATA 160GB internal hard drive last night.

kinda figured it wouldn't be too complicated to install......

had an old 80GB drive to come out. swapped the two drives. checked on the BIOS and it seems to be recognising the new disc (in that its name is there) set detection to Auto.

I know I'll have to format the new drive, but if I go to "My Computer" the new drive doesn't show. is this the way to format a new drive??

But if I go to control panel > Administrative Tools > Computer management > Storage > Disc Management (Local) I can see my c: (Disc 0) and the new drive (Disc 1) which doesn't have any name.
It says that it's "Not Initialized

Incidentally. on the old drive that I took out (Western Digital) the positions of the little jumpers are different than on my new one. even though I set them up as a slave according to the manual. also my old drive had 10 pins, and my new one has only 9.

please help me or I'll throw it out the window!

You can only see the drive in "Disc Management" as it has not yet been partitioned. My computer can only show up partitions not empty disks. You need to go into disc management and create a new partition on the drive. You'll be formatting the filesystem on that partition at the same time. Once you do that it will be visible in Windows.

The jumper configurations differ between drive manufacturers. The only important thing is that they are both jumpered correctly.

If I go into disc management, where or how do I create a new partition?

will this new drive be C: also?

In some cases you'll have to assign the drive a drive letter in Disc Management. Right click it and set a drive letter from the list provided (C wwon't be listed as it's already in use....same with your cdrom drive letter).
If it's formatted it will now appear in My Computer.
