I'm planning on spending 5 - 6 days in Switzerland then making my way down to Milan. Has anyone here done this? Do you reckon I should hire a car or go by train?

    Thanks.

Coming from Switzerland myself, I would recomend the train. Public transport is "slightly" better than what I experienced here so far ;)

You can check train connection here: http://www.sbb.ch/en/index.htm

I wouldn't know anything about the costs of either car or train but i would reckon the train would usualy be faster (and on over night trains you can even sleep while traveling)

I drove from Venice to Milan and on to Montreaux via Aosta which is on the border. It's a handy enough drive and lots of nice scenery. Roads are quite good as you would expect in Europe! I stayed overnight in Aosta as I started in Venice but I reckon you might do it one day. Nothing too exciting in Aosta - not really worth a stopover - but I had to as I was knackered.

If you hire a car and are not returning to Switzerland then you may have to pay a one way rental charge. You may be able to get info at www.avis.ie or similar car rental site.
