Can someone tell what the difference is between Microsoft Office 2003 and Open Office?

I was told by a gentleman with a foreign that there are little? differences. I felt discussing this further would have been a little! difficult.

download it and try it out for yourself. (http://www.openoffice.org/ )

From my experience there is very little differences and in fact some cool extra features that microsoft office doesn't have like being able to convert a .doc file into a .pdf file.

Microsoft Office you have to pay for, Open Office is free. The former is feature laden, the latter, lacking in some.

However, Open Office can read and write Microsoft Office files, so if you don't mind the user interface, Open Office is a real alternative.

    Thanks guys.

I'm new to boards but I think it's fab.
Reckon I could learn about quantum physics here...if I wanted to!

Haha. Quantum physics might be a stretch....but maybe. :D

    Welcome to boards.ie anyway. :)

On the openoffice front: I'd echo the others. Not as fully featured, but free, and supports MS Office documents. Hard to beat the price. :)

I find it has all the features that I ever use. I've removed MS Orifice from my pc at this stage and just use OO.o

    Physics / Chemistry forum

The free OpenOffice has a few obscure bugs, and doesn't have all of the features provided by MS Office. MS Office has many many bugs which require constant patching, and is bloatware, and you pay for the privilege.
