Looks like it could be a great movie. But are they retconning the series? DOn;t get me wrong, it worked with Batman and the idea of a much darker Bond series is very, very appealing in some ways, but a little warning would be nice :D

The last time they tried to make a darker Bond it wasnt everyones cup of time;but it was mine
Timothy Dalton's two films were much darker and damn good too and were commercial successes despite what most people think.
Licence to Kill was the first Bond film to receive an American rating higher than PG.
Dalton's take on the character was to return it to the brooding, cruel and methodical assassin envisioned by Flemming in his original stories.
Hopefully the new Casino Royale will be like this as the last few Pierce Brosnan films were very hammy.

Yeah looks like a good movie, but i don't think Craig fits the bill to be Bond

    agreed,
i can't shake the feeling that although paul hagis adapted, the usual plonkers at Eon will somehow mame it like the last few, brosnan almost looked embarrassed saying the cheesey one liners by the end,
also although craig looks alright, i'm still peeved about his casting, they stated they ditched brosnan because they were looking for a new younger bond approx 28-31 and then they cast a 38 year old, i was always of the opinion that bond actors should be around this age, as jimmy bond was no spring chicken, but if you are specifically going back to his roots you don't hire a 40 year old

Not the "old" Bond, but we haven't seen what the "new" one is going to be like yet.

He Looks a gritter Tipe of Bond, Which is Nice, however I still don’t see him as Bond, it’s the look of Bond that makes Bond - if you know what I mean. > and Craig hasn’t got it.
    .........................................................................................................
    Prediction...
Maybe the same thing will happen to Craig as it did to Lazenby.

You Only Live Twice (1967) .... Sean Connery
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) .... George Lazenby - the public didn’t want him so a deal was done with connery to return.
Diamonds Are Forever (1971) .... Sean Connery

Die Another Day (2002) .... Pierce Brosnan
Casino Royale (2006).... Daniel Craig - the public - yet to be announced
    Bond 22 (2007/2008) ... ???????????

that was kinda the point i was trying to make. the thing thats so great about bond is that he is so cool, suave and cheesy.its all well and good trying to make it more gritty, etc...which will probably make a good action movie, but not necessarily a good bond movie. The Dalton movies may have been darker than previous movies but Dalton himself still had that "bond" feel to him

    Craig looks alright to me.

New film looks like it might actually be worth watching.

Actually, rather than public opinion, I thought that the producers were all too happy for Lazenby to continue on as Bond but Lazenby declined as he didn't want to be typecast. I'm open to correction on that.

afaik you are correct, he was on tv a while back telling how his agent advised against getting typecast, he fired the agent afterwards

You’re correct, but when Connery turned down Her Majesty's Secret Service the public weren’t happy and wanted him back in the driving seat.
I’m guessing the same thing will happen again here; and this time it will be Craig who takes the fall.
    Just a prediction of course.

I'm hoping the purists stfu, stop clinging to what has become a very cheesy and burdened franchise and let them to a decent job of reinventing it into.. well, pretty much what we see in that trailer.

If the films as good as that looks then job well done. The last thing I want is anything like the previous few Bond films.

yeah but the point is lazenby wasn't pushed, he opted out himslef while Eon were trying to get him to sign a 7 picture deal. i can't see Eon pushing anyone, you know one of the least favourite bonds Timothy Dalton (my personal favourite btw) was actually signed for a third movie before the thing went pear shaped

Bond was already reinvented by Cubby Broccoli after A View to a Kill.
They ditched the crappy one liners, made Bond monogamous, made him ruthless and violent .
He even went renegade in A Licence to Kill and some scenes had to be trimmed to reduce an R rating to a PG-13. It was the first Bond film to receive an American rating higher than PG.
It was a big risk to change the formula but it worked .
Broccoli died in 1996 and the franchise went downhill with Brosnans films which were run of the mill stuff.
Seems the general public prefer the cheesy Bond ?

Speaking on behalf of the public, everywhere, I'd like to say once and for all, we dont like cheesy Bond.

With that said, definitions of Cheesy flavoured Bond vary.

For instance, I personally like the first 2 Brosnan films and hated the rest. For starters, one liners sprinkled throughout a film, with no regard for plot/action/general taste, tend to just make me angry.

This one looks promising though, so here's hoping :D

I'm a massive bond fan having the the whole series on vhs then upgraded to dvd, i didnt bother buying the last 2 cause i thought there werent the best at all. Defiantly the last one was poor.

My favourite bond films were definatly you only live twice and timithy daltons living daylights and license to kill. I dont think he gets the credit deserved as bond, i thought he was amazing and really one of the best bonds, if not the most appealing.

He really convinced me of a killer, an assassin.

If they are brining the serious into a more darker life, then im all up for it, i always felt bond was a dark person.

I agree I think Dalton was the best Bond, guy had great charisma.
There is an excellent documentary on The Living Daylights Special Edition DVD which details the casting of Dalton and the reasoning behind it.
Its one of the best Making of features I've ever seen.

All the making of features on the eariler bond dvd's are brilliant, the only making of features I've ever enjoyed. That is until you get to Goldeneye and the making off feature is just bloody Liz Hurley talking some sh*te.

Most people seem to hate Timothy Dalton but he also was my favourite bond, and his two features, license to kill and the living daylights were my favourite bond movies....License to Kill is the only Bond movie to receive a 15 rating in the UK so it was all that more grittier, and I loved it :)

Trailer for Casino Royale looks alright. Nothing special, just alright mind...
