Want to update computer?

Hi

Got my computer about 5 years ago and its slow as
fu*k. Was told my CPU was sh*t and my motherboard
(though i thought they are the same)

Fujitsu siemens T-bird
Intel pentium 3 750 MHZ was 98 updated to XP
192MB ram
motherboard micro-star international
model MS-6178

Anyone who could tell me what i could get to update
it that wouldnt put a hole in my pocket
(well a big hole).

Sorry but your best and probably only decent option is to get a new machine.

Something like that plus an uprated PSU if you feel confident enough to fit it. Should be a stright swap and reinstall of OS.

But tbh, feylya's probably right. What do you use the machine for anyway?

Nothing much just looking on the net and playing
poker. Awful problems with it

that machine is mroe than enough for browsing / office stuff.

get yourself windows 2000,
backup your stuff and reformat.

itll be like a new machine

Would you consider installing Linux onto it?
Would be alot less of a hog then say XP but it may not be your cup of tea so to speak. At least it's free.

Extra ram would deffo help speed wise if your gonna stick with XP but in the long run a new rig is the way forward.

Maybe a format/install would be a temp solution as I'm sure there's plentry of crap™on the system.

If you can put more mem into it and reformat/reinstall xp to get rid of 5 yrs of crap, it should run fine, or as previously stated win 2000 would sort you out.

Hi Edge i have a Suse Linux 7.1 personnal
here at home but a guy i know told me not
to put it in cause its sh*t.

I've Suse 10.1 here somewhere myself and found it to be fairly solid. I've the retail version.
It can be tricky setting up things like DVD playback etc on the free verions though. Not exactly user friendly but if you feel like learning a thing or 3 give it a go. Helpful linux forum here. say bye to spyware/virii etc

Sure, it looks like a format/install is on the cards at some point anyway so why don't you back up your data and install Suse and see for yourself?

Worst case...you hate it and put a fresh install of Windows on there (you have your XP cd, serial & drivers handy, right?) and sort you slowness for a while or you dig it and enjoy the linux experience.

Some people like it and other just hate it. No idea until you take the plunge.

(Suse Linux 7.1 is kinda dated though)
