    Hi,
have an upstairs pc and a media centre downstairs.

On setting up the network (mapping a media-pc drive) all worked fine.
I could see all folders on the media pc.

I clicked the "recon at login".
But since that first time, I cannot map to the mediapc (it is on !!).
I have looked at the Services that are running and made 2 of the networking services automatic but no joy,

Any other ideas or settings to try ??

    thx

    Wireless or Wired?

And can you ping the connection on the media centre?

wireless and yes I can ping the media centre.

The media centre is called Media Pc and when i try to map to this drive - it does not connect even though it did the initial time I tried.

edit - just wondering has it anything to do with a wandering IP address on my main pc- how do I stop my ip address from changing --if that is the problem

You should try and stick with two IP address for each machine. Either turn of DHCP on your router and assign manually two IP address to each machine. This way, when remapping occurs, the ip address will remain the same. If your IP addresses are changing, the present mapping to the drive will not exist.

You can keep dhcp turned on and assign IP address by mac address so the router will always keep the same IP address for each machine.

If each machine has an IP address of 192.168.0.2 & 192.168.168.3 and your mapping from 0.2 to 0.3 use \\192.168.0.3\name of shared folder as your map.

Also, run network wizard and join both machines to the same workgroup.

    Hope this helps.

If you map the drive using ip address (\\192.168.1.1\shared) then if the ip address of the machine hosting the shared folder changes then the mapping fails.

If you use the machine's name (\\MyDesktop\shared) it will work regardless of ip address change.

As others have said, make sure both machines are in the same workgroup and then map the folder using the hostname.

I don't think you can have spaces in hostnames, or am I wrong?
Better take it out anyway, windows has a habit of being finicky over stuff like that.
