    Oh to be loaded.

Gumball 2006 took place from the 29th of April until the 7th of May.
    1-2nd May - Europe leg
    3-5th May - Asian leg
    6-7th May - US leg

    The overall winners were:
Team Polizei (#44) - Bentley Continental GT
Team Torquenstein (#48) - Ford GT

No Veyrons unfortunately :(, but there were a handful of SLR's, a Phantom, an F40, F50, two M5's, some CL's and CLS's, and a shower of Bentleys and Lambos.

Here are the Irish participants. There was another Irish person in green Gallardo, but I'm not sure if it's an Irish car.

    Ferrari 360 Spyder
    14kk.th.jpg26ba2.th.jpg

BMW 630 - Driver is actually in a wheelchair, there was a piece in the Irish Times Motors section on him.

Don't work for me in either Firefox or IE ... just get a kind of upload screen for Imagevenue rather than the images themselves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,753 ✭✭✭qz

Sorry about that, I've saved them to my PC and uploaded them, so there you are.

I didn't know there was an Irish Ferrari in it. Does anyone know who it is? I wonder if they done the whole trip from Europe to Asia to the America? I knew about the Irish BMW but they finished in Europe.

I know a young lad (25 or so) who owns one of those scummy premium rate phone line companies lives in Glenageary, Dublin and has a black Ferrari.

    Could be him...

I think it was £15-20k last year. This year the cars and participants had to be flown from Europe to Asia and then to America and that's not cheap.

In fairness, value for money isn't really the spirit of the gumball!

Even more accidents this year. I wonder when the first gumball fatality will be.

Surely that would be the end of it.

Yeah, I've seen a wrecked Phantom and Murcielago from this year. Ever see the Torquenstein crash in the Viper a few years back? Mother of God, can't believe he survived!

There was another bad one that year.
A highly tuned Cossie spun out after hitting a gravel patch trying to overtake, on the hard shoulder....
ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD.

The car was totally trashed. The roll cage saved both of them who walked away. However one of them infact broke a few bones including one in his back.

You don't hear about that side of the gumball much!

Edit: Lots of Gumball crashes in this video:

That'd be the Reyland Cosworth.. being led in convoy by the Mayor of Marrakesh.

Fastest recorded Cossie @ 194.7mph. Also held/holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest caravan tow at 128.8mph (not sure if the Norris Designs Evo surpased that though)

Sorry, it was 60k euro, or 40k sterling, my mistake - from gumballers.net -
As we have done in past years, as loyal past Gumballers you will recieve a discount of 20% with the total entry fee being £30,000 to you (based on 2 persons per car); and £40,000 to new participants.

thank god the people walked away safely.

I was driving the BMW and you're correct "she was only a 630" and whats more I borrowed the car for the gumball as i drive a stock 3 series and thats not verry gumball at all. I had personal reasons for doing the gumball as i broke my back in a motorcycle accident in dec 04 and the Gumball finished in the playboy mansion one year to the day that i finally got out of hospal, I figured the gumball would be a cool way to prove to my self that being in a wheelchair is a minor setback and that life goes on, for those curious I borrowed the car and pulled every string i could to do it on the cheap because there is no way on earth I could afford to drop £40,000 for an 8 day holiday. Anyway allthough I only drove the european leg (as did over 20 teams) I did "put the foot down" and drop the car back to dublin and then flew to the US to catch up with my fellow gumballers and enjoy the rest of the rally as a passenger in various cars, the best of both worlds...these boys know how to party.

Hi gkbolger , I am thinking about going on the Gumball next year , just got off the phone with Gumball HQ who are forwarding some more detailed info . It looks like its to Dubai next year and won't be as expensive as last year.

My question is re your support vehicle , did you have one and what was the cost . they couldnt really give me a defo answer on costing for next year but it does look like you are allowed to bring a support vehicle.

I just wondering if I could legitmately bring an Range Rover Sport as my "support" vehicle and carry a spare a tyre and petrol can for my amg . I am thinking that way I can get a few mates along aswell and divide the cost as I am sure the Range Rover Sport can keep up with the amg and it will have all the gumball livery on it so it would be default in the gumball race. Do you know if the support driver gets accommodation ferries etc and entry into the parties .

    Cheers for the help.

Luckily by driving the BMW I was in good shape re support. (two of the SLRs gave trouble on the first day.) I would say the best thing to do woulld be decide do you really really need a support vehicle, is there any way you could share a support with someone else? etc.... As for having more people on the road with you, the Gumball HQ will let you know how much per head. I got a call from them a few days ago so I know the proposed route and cost, (it's not cheap). Also you should be aware that there are additional costs involved, but as someone already stated here if you have to think about the cost then you probably wouldn't be thinking about entering. If you really are serious then drop me a line.

    Graham.
