i hate sayin this but i detest Monroes so much right now, went in there last week with my housemate for a sunday morning fry, it took 10 mins to order the f'ing thing while the barwoman chatted to one of the off duty workers and then 2 or 3 nights ago was in there again for a quiet pint and a pizza, all was grand untill they started blaring really ****ty pop songs throughout the pub makin conversation damned near impossible (esp when one of the lads you're chattin to only has one workin ear).
other than that i stay clear of all the shirts and skirt pubs and sallys, shame sallys has gone downhill so bad and so quick

I agree Monroes has really let itself go...
Poor service...terrible pints and that ancient TV sitting on two seats is pathetic...

The other Pub I hate is The Front Door..I mean whats the point of having a Pub so jam packed that you can't move or get served. not to mention the fact that the iterior is very boring and cramped anyway.

And it actually isn't all that bad.

Hrm, worst pub in Galway would have to be .. uhm.. hole in the wall, but only when it's overly busy.

I think it would be Mixers ..... no actually that one blu!
    ..
well maybe ..... Ah fcuk I'm trying to think of all the pubs and its hurting my head.

Perhaps a poll would add to this topic a bit more.

Mixers without a doubt. My local would be The Blue Note.

Should I mention your complaints to Mr. Gary Monroe? I should be seeing him on the weekend. I'm sure he'd appreciate the feedback

This is so true. I effing hate that one, and Living Room (same reason). They're ok in the evening before the "skirts and shirts" hordes get there.
Why do all guys (except me) wear shirts that has the same pattern as my kitchen towels?

Monroes is ok, albeit it has a very american feel to it, think it's the open planning.

that is so true! I hate wearing shirts with a passion. Give me an awesome tshirt anyday!

I hate the Living Room when it gets overly busy, and you get all the poncy people in there.

The only real pub in Galway I like is the Kings head.

The only real pub in Galway I like is the Kings head.

Yikes. King's Head. I'd hardly class that as a real pub.

Worst pub is Hole in the Wall.

Best pub - The Roisin Dubh

    Neachtains is decent enough too

    PJ's

Worst Pub - Fibbers(worst pints ever!)
    Best Pub - Bier Haus

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 100 ✭✭5times

Worst Pub - Any of the ones listed above .

Best Pub - Tough call . Maybe Taaffes or Bier Haus . Roisins is full of wannabe cool types and the "super" pubs are just crap .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,594 ✭✭✭forbairt

Best for me used to be ...

    Sallys ... Roisins ... Blue Note ... Stage Door ... McSwiggans ...

This of course was back when they had atmosphere ... (or was that smoke) hmm.. :)

worst now .. would have to be fibbers ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,215 ✭✭✭galah

PJ's, Roisins, Blue Note, Bierhaus, Massimo's. All great Pubs.

The worst ones - The Crane (the smell...), Neactains (full of weirdos, all the time), and all those noisy annoying "superpubs" (Living Room, Red Square et al)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 979 ✭✭✭Keedowah

dont know if it'll come under "pubs" but i dislike the Skeff for some reason - not that i really hate it.

    Best pub - Sallys.

also neachtains is not full of weirdos..you calling me a weirdo!
neachtains has a mixture of regulars and tourists. can't say i ever seen any strange people there.

not going to argue, it's all about preference I suppose...;-)

I only ever met complete lunatics/psychos/weirdos in Neactains (somehow, they find me...) although it's nice in summer when (if) you can sit outside...

I also like BK's for a quiet glass of wine, or two...

I know, but for a guy who doesnt go out drinking much anymore, its grand for me :P

I drink in Blu nice barmaids! Not my Fav tho I like the front door from time to time and clearly hole in the Wall and Fibbers are the worst , Hole just bearable on rag week , Rabiits is nice on a sunny day I think the beer garden is nice and quiet not full and can talk easy nice Pints aswell!!Generally the pubs are grand, skeff is pretty crap all there seems to be is office parties hen parties birthyday parties etc I never went in here only for that reason.

I think Cellar Bar is pretty good at night! never get any hassle there some nice birds and the downstairs is pretty deadly all for free and if you get sick of downstairs head up and can listen to the tunes or talk up there.

Quays can be ok like drinking outside and see every one come down shop street and alwas full of americans so nearly alwas a bit of craic.

I stay clear of mixers all together dont like the crowd and I hate being called Mong etc

Sallys is good craic allright good music and pool table but its not for every one!

Where is bier haus? Is this a new place? Or is it a new name?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,215 ✭✭✭galah

The Bierhaus is on Dominick Street, opposite Stranos (down the road from Roisins). Nice selection of international beers, and usually a nice crowd. Can get pretty packed in there though...

    Full Ack.

Does that horrible pub next to Supermacs in Lurgan Park still exist? That would be on my list also...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 468 ✭✭MrJones

apologies, i meant to say all of that about mcswiggans not monroes. for some reason i always miss up the names of the 2 places.

    The Merlin is still there!

They did up the offie but the bar is still a kip.

I used to drink in Rabbitt's all the time before the refurbishment. It was a kip but had great atmosphere. These days it's a bit too quiet for me.

After Chritmas Eve i would have to say The Crane.I thought all the crustys had left Galway years ago, obviously not.Upstairs was absolutley discusting, there was a serious smell and the condensation on the walls and windows was pissing down.Moved downstairs later and it wasnt as bad,but still loads of wasters.
Although its a completly different crowd id still put it along the lines of Fibbers ,Foxes ,Mixers as a no go.Dont like Sallys either full of grumpy moshers that dont like the look of anyone.Personally i always like a few in An Tobar.
Neachtains definitley doesnt have as many weirdos as it used to have its gotten alot better. Its pretty nice there on a sunny day sitting outside but next thing ya know its closing time and your wallets empty.

since i live directly across from the hole in the wall i'd have to say that it has to be the worst. I have awoke on many the occasion to have people race kegs down eyre street!

And they have recently got in free wi-fi. That makes it the best pub in Galway, by my reckoning! Ah the joys of a cool guinness and international performance art. And yes, thats what I'm calling it these days.

do ye remember the place on prospect hill now called M T Pockets.
That was some kip! it was only for crusties though

It was called O'Malleys, and it was a great spot. The owner was possibly the rudest man I have ever met, his son was the second rudest, the place had no visible air conditioning, and yet I still loved the place. Never afraid to put on a metal gig, was O'Malleys.
    Sorely missed.

Rather be a so-called crustie, than a pink polo shirt wearing, CP's attending, Stereophonics listening, business studies student, slab of blandness and uniformity.

omalleys that's right. was in there myself a few nights.
    drum n bass nights.
it was dirty though, filthy place.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭kevmy

The place beside the the goalpost... Central bar ? the hole in the wall is a kip, the walls seat and the music is too loud BUT it has a certain something, call it atmosphere for lack of a better word.
Personal favourite is Taffees nice mix of tourists, auld guys and students and possibly other people as well. Lovely Guinness and can get a good trad session going.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 131 ✭✭millivanilli

I really hate the skeff its massive and scary and has weird pictures on the wall and they give you cocktails that smell funny and are gone off. I agree about the hole in the wall and the kings head i think they're awful, cullinanes on eglington street is pretty grim too. my new favourite pub is rabbittes because they have thrones you can sit on.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3 Jezebel

I would definitely have to agree with Kevmy…the Central Bar worst bar none. Unless you like to be deafened by someone singing karaoke or to be chatted up by some 60 year old perv asking ya “have ya any knicker on”….that was my one and only experience in that bar…never again!!!

Loads of great pubs in Galway though, couldnt pick one

Bleh try working there! Lugging a bucket of ice up and down three flights of stairs and everyone dipping their manky hands in for some free ice cubes as if it was World War fscking 2 and there was a national Ice Cube shortage! Ah well, twas an experience.

But it's not a bad pub at all, well run.

If we're aiming for shíte pubs, has anyone ever been in that little green place beside Maguires pub on Dominick street. Their only redeeming quality is that the Ladies and Gents says "Mary" and "John"...... Just don't open the door
