Drastic change in career - any experiences?

I've been working in I.T. for 6 years and to be honest feeling a bit sick of it.
I've either done jobs that pay crap money and work you like a dog, or pay good money but are incredibly boring because there's so little work to do.

I'd like a more creative job, but I can't afford to earn less than 30k

Has anyone here with mortgage/loans etc manage to change career without ending up in debtors prison? Please tell me your experiences.

    Heya Etho...

I can totaly understand what you are saying I dont earn anything near 30k a year i only earn bout 25k.

I hate the IT proffesion so i decided I wanted to go back to college, but after alot of thought I decided I would start up my own buisness. The starting of the buisness is still in the pipelines at the moment. But it is looking good.

If you are unhappy in IT and wanna go for something creative you might want to look at going back to college part time. Do something like Advertisment or something in the area of creativity.

If you need any help on what colleges etc provide such courses gimme a pm and i can help ya out some :)

    Oda

The problem in your case is probably the size of your mortgage and loans. You really need financial freedom to go changing careers.

Look at how you can reduce your debt burden. If you really, really want to change careers, give up as much as you can and concentrate on lowering your indebtedness. The less you pay out, the less you need to earn and the more of a pay cut you can take or go back to college.

If you have a newish car, then an older one will do. If you have more bedrooms than you need, sell the house and rent cheaply while you work on changing careers. When you have successfully changed careers, you can think about buying a house again.

If you badly want to change careers, you will find a way. Value happiness more than money.

I changed career last year - went from IT into lecturing. While not a drastic change of direction, it certainly was a change of pace.

The change has had a very positive impact on my life. It was certainly a risk - permanent jobs are few and far between, and there is no guarantee of a job from year to year, but the risk is worth it.

If you are unhappy, do something about it. Decide where you want to go and get a plan in place to get there. This light at the end of the tunnel is what kept me going through the dark days in IT-land.

Any specific questions, feel free to ask.
