So far so good. I'm on World 2 level 5. The game feels great.

I'm sure most people are aware of what the new game looks like. 3D models in a 2D world. It works very well. The sound is excellent (especially with headphones). As always, I am crap at these kinda games (I always just miss the moving platform). However, there are only 8 worlds so I can't imagine it taking that long to complete.

The giant mushroom is cool but so far only appeared maybe 3 times, and it only lasts maybe 30 seconds. The wall kick has saved me a few times. Not much else to report so far. I hope they do this 2D/3D combination for the next metroid. As good as Prime Hunters is, I still prefer the classic gameplay.

*Please don't ask me where I got this game - no its not for sale yet*

not necessarily asking you where you got the game, but, i'm planning on getting the DS Lite as soon as it's released here and i'm wondering if there is any kind of homebrew scene on the DS?

also, is there a european release date for this game yet?
would like to see a combo pack of New Super Mario Bros. / DS Lite on release..

Its out on June 30th in Europe.
The DS is region free, so you can import it from the US next week if you want.

I'm sure there will be a combo pack.

Played the first couple of worlds last night. This is a beautiful beautiful game. Gorgeous graphics, perfect gameplay, and I'm still humming the bloody music.
Can't wait to play some more tonight.

i assume the m3 is some kind of a mod that attaches to the ds that allows roms and back-ups to be played? is it compatible with the ds lite?

I got this yesterday and, while I've only been playing it since then, so far it's been quite underwhelming. For the record, it's more like Super Mario Bros. 3 rather than the original Super Mario Bros, which is probably my favourite game of all time.

There's something about the graphics I really don't like. Yes, they're functional, but 3D-on-2D Mario just looks... crap. Difficult to differenciate Mario to Super Mario aswell.

There's lots of other little things about the game I just don't like, like the abundance of powerups and extra lives, and the horribly tacked-on minigames from Super Mario 64 DS. Fortunetly though, Nintendo chose to retain the classic noises from the old games (such as the Mario jump sound) instead of full Mario voices (if anyone played Mario vs. Donkey Kong on the GBA, you'll know how annoying "Yippee" and "Woo-hoo" gets after a play).

So it's a disappointment for me. Another arsed Mario game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Thats a bit harsh. Its classic Mario for me, updated for modern gamers. If they churned out a Super Mario Brothers clone without updating it, it would have been a huge disappointment. I agree that new features like giant mario and the shell powerup are a bit gimmicky, but features like wall jumping, the super coins, mini-mario, secret routes and puzzles add a fresh new spin to a classic format.

Its pretty challenging, particularly Worlds 6,7 and 8, but I'd love if a harder mode was available after finishing it though.... even an extra star world with a batch of bitch hard levels. Pity its so easy to get green mushrooms.

The downside of Mario - no matter how much they give you, you always want more.

Having said that, I finished it early last week, but I'm still playing it every night trying to get all the coins and hidden exits.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,585 ✭✭✭honru

Ah, secret routes are a Mario staple. :)

It's good that you and other folks are enjoying it, but I just can't see this game alongside the "golden age" of Mario games. It just seems like to me like Nintendo don't really care.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

IMHO, Super Mario World is the best Mario game, and secret exits were definitely an integral part of that.

Another 3 months development could have added alot more value to this game....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,585 ✭✭✭honru

While I can't say anything for Super Mario Sunshine, I love all the (main) Mario games before it.

Right now, Mario seems like this Mickey Mouse-like mascot with no soul. All these countless tie-in games like Baseball, Party and Pinball have just detrimented the character and franchise. New "standard" characters such as Baby Mario and Waluigi haven't helped either.

Ah well. I hope for the best for Super Mario Galaxy and (moreso) Yoshi's Island 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,709 ✭✭✭Balfa

I dunno.. It's great fun, but the power ups are kinda boring. The minimushroom is only useful in a few situations, and I've yet to find any use for the blue shell. The mega mushroom (does anyone else see the irony in Nintendo implying that MEGA mushrooms are superior to SUPER mushrooms??) is good for a laugh now and then, but doesn't play a big role in the game.

That leaves the good old fire flower, which makes it feel like SMB1, which seems to be what they're aiming for. But with the wonderful costumes in SMB3 and the cape in SMW (whoever touched a fire flower after getting access to the cape??), it felt like a step backwards.

Then there are the underwater scenes and those penguins that chuck snowballs, which feels more like Donkey Kong Country than Mario, and the whole uncover every coin in every level replayability, which really feals more like Warioland 4 than Mario. It's a kind of bizarre all over the place game, but I still like it a lot.

I still would have liked a take-turns-on-the-one unit two player with luigi though :(

Yep, have this myself, breezed through up to world 8 on the first day of owning it. I'm disappointed with it to be honest, it's the bastard child of Mario 64's movements (i.e. wall slide etc.) and Super Mario Bros from the NES. Don't get me started on the multiplayer game Mario vs Luigi, it's just... ****. Oh and the much vaunted blue shell power up is, crap.

Its lovely, picked mine up on ebay last week, not playing it incessantly as I have tons of other things to play but so far just onto world 2 and its wonderful, I would have loved to see it as an update to Super Mario 3, that is the best of the series, better than Super Mario World, but its more like the first one, ah well, still a thing of genius, the graphics and spot effects are great, mini games a nice extra, the springy platform that spins you is nice too.
However it does just make me pine all the more for a GBA or DS conversion of Super Mario Allstars, the best value cart ever, why can't I have it now? Please?
Still, the DS is the most played machine in my considerable collection and I still have Star Fox and DiddyKongRacingDS to look forward too, here's hoping for Jet Force Gemini to get converted too!

I hear that. In a way I'm glad they didn't include the cape because, well, there's not much to expand from it after World. In that respect (along with the trademark pole grab at the end of each level) the game would seem more like an update of the original Mario Bros. However, the original was solely about getting a high score, not so much in this new version which focuses on exploring/puzzles/collecting (akin to later games in the series, such as Mario Bros. 3).

How many lives do you all have? I've amassed 37.

Err, Mario games have always been pretty easy to burn through if that's the way you play em.

But the fun is in taking your time, exploring the worlds, opening up all the secrets.

    I think anyway.

I'm having good fun with it. That is, when I get tear it out of my girlfriends claws.

Will the M3 work with the DS Lite ? Or is only the original NDS ?

Well lads, just did the Irishgamer price check. For anyone buying this today, it's cheapest in GAME, Xtravision, Gamestop or Smyths. They're all €45. HMV and Virgin are €50.

Got mine today. I like the 3D characters and the levels do look very colourful. I'm still trying to get use to the feel of the game though. Looks alot like mario bros 3 as well but with some SSB moves?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,586 ✭✭✭sock puppet

I just got it today. I'm enjoying it so far. At first it looked like a remake of super mario bros because the first levels were very alike

A 'Super Challenge' mode is hidden in this game. Finish the game, go the map screen, and press L R L R X X Y Y

The catch? You can't backtrack through levels, so its more like the original SMB.

How many lives do you all have? I've amassed 37.
on 32 myself, and at the start of world 5.
i'm loving it so far though, and have already started going back to previous levels to get every coin.
kind of wish that they hadn't gone for the obvious
    ice world
though... i always hate those sections of platformers...

Nearly completed the game now but i have to say i don't like the way you have to defeat the boss a certain way to access world 3 and 5. And skippin levels is another thing that seems a bit annoyin too. But it was fun to get to a boss with a big mushroom and squash em :D

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 18,809 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kimbot

I have it cleared, gotten all my coins and all and i still think its a great game!! I done all the way through in less than a week!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭TheAlmightyArse

There's a little hidden extra challenge for anyone who has finished the game:
On the map screen, press start, L, R, L, R, X, X, Y, Y to enable "locked" scrolling, as in the first Super Mario Bros.

    It's actually a bit crap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Yeah, the Super Challenge Mode was a bit of a letdown alright. I haven't through the game on it yet, but I imagine it makes some of the vertically scrolling levels a bit difficult......

The should have made it mushrooms/fireflowers only, and added a much stricter timelimit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,716 ✭✭✭✭Earthhorse

    Wow!

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread but I just finished this tonight. What a game! Best since Mario 3 in my opinion and that's saying something considering that was the greatest game of all time.

Managed to finish with only 2 coins missing (3 if you count one from Bowser's castle but I didn't expect to defeat him on my first attempt). The middle coin in world 7-A and the final coin in world 4's Ghost House, along with the exit to the warp, eluded me. I also missed out on 3 mushroom houses along the way, in world's 2, 4 and 7. Also had around 85 lives left when finished so would agree with those who said it was too easy. I think this is the only Mario game in which I've yet to see the continue screen.

Think I'll try and speed run it next. One of the guys over on Twin Galaxies reckons it can be done in half an hour which sounds about right to me. And for those of you wondering where the blue shell would come in useful the answer is in speed running I think. I know that's a bit of a specialist area but I reckon getting the shell in 1-2 will be necessary to finish the game in minimum time.

Great little game, with the fact that it´s pretty easy being the only pitfall. For my money though, Super Princess Peach is a much better platformer, and while it´s a pretty similar challenge, the levels are a lot bigger and layered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 741 ✭✭✭Chumpski

This is my first Mario game ever! (I did have the odd go of Super Mario World on my friends SNES 12 years ago or so alright to be fair) I love it. For a new comer to Mario, i find it challenging enough at times, but it never over does it. Im only on world 3 though so it may get harder... Im taking my time with this one, trying to get all the coins and all the secret exits.
