Well Ive just spent the whole weekend ripping my DVD collection onto my harddrive and then trying to convert to divx. And it works on my pc but not too well on my stand alone divx player

What is the best program to use to create .avi / divx from VOB ? Whats most used by everyone out there. Just downloaded "Dr.Divx", anyone used this one?

I notice most files on the net are encoded into .avi, is this a better format.

    Nice one :o

    For Divx/Xvid:

    GordianKnot

    For H.264:
    Nero Recode

H.264 is the new king of the hill and Nero's encoder is absolutely simple to use no matter your previous experience.

For best comp use Xvid (FREE) and Gordian Knot(also FREE) to make *.avi container type files.

You're going to need to find out what features your standalone does or doesn't have.

EG. you'll almost definitely have to disable GMC and Quarter Pixel when you encode. These two features are pretty heavy on the CPU to decode and the standalones can't hack it

    Nice one guys.

I will have to look into the above stuff, new to me. I have a portable HDD media player, no disk only HDD. It played very good but when I transfered to DVD payer that has divx it fell over.

Ill download GordianKnot program and try it.

Can you get 5.1 sound from that program or do you need some super-duper encoder for that ?
