    hi guys

It came yesterday.I took it out of the box it found my wireless router and said the connection was excellent but i cant get online.
If I keep trying it sometimes logs into messenger but wont into msn.com or .ie
i can get onto the first page of iol.ie or rte.ie but no further.
I have no wep on the router and have disabled all firewalls.I have another pc connected wirelessly and its no problem.
    I can connect using ethernet.
Shockinling Dell tech are closed till monday!
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Cheers

Wow 3 posts the same ;)

Have you your firewall (windows firewall) turned on?

Should allow you to surf but check it out anyway

:o I know I was using the dell and it didnt move ..I tried to take the extras off.....
Anyways..yes I have the firewall on windows off.
I pinged 192.168.0.1 (if thats the right no)and it said
    packets sent 4
    recieved 3
    lost 1
I have fiddled around with the wireless connection and its still telling me its connected to excellent strength.ip address of 192.168.0.109

Do a site scan there to see if there are any other wifi networks in your area? Do you have a DECT cordless phone? Your getting packet loss which indictates that the signal is
    a) Weak
    b) Interference
    c) Radio in card is borked.
Whats the make and model of each of the equipment?

Heading out now so answer ya later

    D-link di-514 router for wired/wireless
    zyxel prestige 600 bb modem
dell inspirion 6400(just out of box on sat!)
intel pro wlan internal 3945 a/b/g wireless card
    esat bt bb

am also connecting to same using another pc with d-link wireless card.
    and its working perfectly.

the dell is telling me its connected to the network and if i repair it says there is no issues needing fixin!!
How do I do a site scan?

Sorry, borked is a technical ;) term for broken!

Ok the Dlink is an 802.11b based wireless router meaning its wireless speed is @ max 11Mbps as opposed to 54Mbps for the 802.11g routers but don't despair this speed is multiples of your BB speed so not to worry.

Where I think there may be an issue is with the A/B/G Intel card (not that its broken) just that it has compatibility issues with your wifi router although I have nothing online to support this.

A way around this is to set the card to only use 802.11b as the fact you can connect using your other machine leads me to believe this the problem.

Try to change the card to only use 802.11b, /scratches head and tries to remember the way to do this... Hold on I'll just power up the laptop its bound to be similiar...

A thought, you do have the Zyxel in bridge mode? EG not being used as a router as having two routers on the same network segment can be messy, as regards putting the modem into bridge mode... Dunno It should be on the config pages somewhere as an option and covered in the manual but I think it has more to do with the Intel gear in your lappie than the routers.

OK here is how to change settings to just use 802.11: See Pic attached for more.

Right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware Tab > Device Manager Button > Expand the Network Adaptors Section (click the + sysbol) > Find Intel Pro Wireless etc in the list & right click > Properties > Advanced Tab > Select the 802.11 Mode Property and from the Value drop down list select 802.11b Mode (or similiar) > Click OK. Close all windows. END

Prob best to do a restart here just to be sure, do that then try to connect to the router again.

    Hi all
I came to a hotspot as dell and sugguested and i can get online no problem
so that now means that there is a compatibilty issue with the intel card and the dlink router.
can anyone no advise on a router that might be compatiable? i have a zyxel prestige 600 modem so also want it to work with that too!

again tks so much for the help so far...

I'd try updating the driver for the Intel card first, that was just Dell trying to weasel their way out of holding their hand up and admitting they installed cards with compatibility issues!

well got a result at last...
someone from dell called just a few mins ago(a bit higher up in the tech chain!) and within minutes had the problem sorted!
turns out the power management was set to low on the network card.
he had me move the dial and its all set now!
imagie all that was done today for it to be such a simple thing!
He said that some systems were shipped with the power default as low.
    so am so pleased now
thanks again for all your help and hopefully it might help someone else.
    Cheers
