What lens should I purchase next?

I was thinking of this lens, to begin. Most of what I prefer to shoot is outdoor/distance work, for which my 18-55 is pretty dissapointing as the lens just isn't as sharp as I'd like. This lens is also wide-angle.

What's the opinion? On a side note, I get to play with this next month. :D

Do you mean landscape type stuff? 28 mm is actually around 44mm on an eos 350 ( is that what you have?) so it's pretty close to a standard 50mm on a full frame camera. ie not really wide angle at all.

What is your spending limit? I really like the look of the Canon 10-22 but it is daft money for a non L lens though it has got good reviews. The 17-40L would be my choice but again out of my league money wise at the minute.

The 18-55 is definitely not the worst lens I have seen. You need to spend a good few bob to get better quality.

Not much help I suppose but there ya go.

PS the 50mm 1.8 Mk II is a beauty. Cheap, plasticky but by jazus does it take sharp pictures.

For €200 euros your choice is very limited, for outside (good light) and distance, Id recommend the Canon 90-300 4.5-5.6 DC, its about €220 and is a pretty good lense for the dosh. On the wide angle side of things, the cheapest would be the sigma 10-22mm for arounds €360.

i've got the 18 - 55 and 55 -2000mm, kit that came with the camera, the 18-55 seems ok but the the other one is not great at all i'm thinking- low build quality, low spec, low cost!!
i looked at lenes but god! the prices
i'll be putting up with these two for a good while

now
if i had a fairy godmother
or a fairy
or godmother or anything
and if your listening
i'd like the EF 24-70 mm f/2.8L USM (for general walkabout camera)
Canon EF 70-200 mm f/4L USM (sports photography distance etc.)

please :)

oops that should read 200 not 2000

A website that i think is great is HTTP://www.Photozone.de

They get lenses from people who use the site and test them in a lab
So the results are for lenses that are on the market and not just sent to them from the manufacturers.

They seem to have unbiased reviews on lenses and no one to answer to

All their tests are on a 350D small sensor ,so great for 350D users.

Hah, I wish. The 70-200mm would be great if I can get it locally.

Canons 50mm f1.8 I got 2 days ago. Excellent lens, feels cheap but omg the glass quality is excellent. And I got mine for 90euros as aposed to 120 delivered!.

I think Im going to go for a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 for around 600 euro next!

Maybe you should just save, how bad is the 18-55? I have the nikon version kit lens and I have got some pretty good shots with it...

Any one who has the money I'd say buy a 70 or 80 to 200 2.8, they are just soooooooooooooo good. but it is a fair bit of saving...

Its grand for the most part, but I would prefer something that produced sharper photos and which had a larger aperature (for candid shots).

well, a 50mm f1.8 lens will give you beatifully sharp shots and a short enough depth of field to make nice standout portraits. It it probably a good buy if you are going to be using a 1.6crop sensor because 80mm is just on the wide end of what looks well in portrait. As for wideangle lenses, the effect of shallow depth of field at 28mm is far less perceptible than at 200mm, for the same f2.8 aperature. I'd recommend saving although if you must a f1.8 50mm is something you will never grow out of, short of finding the money for its 1.4 big brother... so probably not before you get your values worth...
