You can register your business name at CRO.ie. If you register as a sole trader you will have to do tax returns once a year. If you register as a LTD company I think its once a month.

Do some thorough market research to see if you can survive in your chosen area. Do a business plan to forecast startup costs, ongoing & future costs and growth of your business.

If you are starting a business on your own you should have the following skills as well as the technical skills for your market area:

    Accounts managements
Sales ability, new contacts and customer generation
    Marketing skills, knowhow and cash
    Paper pushing
    Invoicing & Receipts
    Budgiting skills
    Business planning skills

    Patience
    Determination
    Staying Power
Ability to follow contracts through to resolution
    Conflict resolution ability
Contingency plans if something or everything goes wrong

On the upside there is the satisfaction of building a successful business from the ground up.

The best way of generating customers depends on your type of business. Try local newspaper ads which are reasonably priced. Set up a website to refer customers to your product (get one at www.irishwebhq.com). Get business cards and give them to everyone who may be interested.
Get listed on local business directory websites. Best of all tell people about your venture as word of mouth is a great way to spread business.

Back this up with a product/service that satisfies your customers every time and focus on good customer relationships. This is vital to build and maintain business.

    Good Luck.

Markol do you own your own buisness?

I do yes. It tests my patience at times. All customers are different. Some are impossible to please and want more and more. Others are easy to deal with and understand what your are doing for them.

It's vital to keep track of what you spend and make to see how your business is doing.

    Hi Odarallo,

Make sure you look at all the angles involved and research as much as you can.

Im in a similar situation as yourself, but you quickly come to realise that there is more involved than at first glance, especially when you dont use a third party company for setting up and taking care of taxes etc

I started as a sole trader in April and would love it if someone could give me a bit of info on accounts I need to be keeping-I have been recording income and am up to date on this and am OK on that bit but would love just to know what other accounts I should be doing
I have a simple set up-it is only me, work from home and have nothing to buy or sell per say(I do research so physcial products involved) and all my business is done over internet so expenses are a minimum...

Any advise would be very welcome..

    Thank you

The buisness that I am seeting up is going to be a below the line marketing company, and as the company progress make it a above the line marketing company aswell.

All i need is grounding and a way of getting clients in.

there are two ways of getting clients.

they call you, or you call them.

i have no idea what a below the line marketing company is. what is it?

Ok a Below the line marketing company is one that deals with designs and the way a product will look for shops etc.

A above the line marketing agency deals with radio, television and billboards.

Do i need a sample and should i ring the likes of coca cola and cadburys?

Im setting up a business in the IT industry hopefully encompassing most aspects.

If i was you, i would contact as many potential clients as possible, the more you contact the better your chances of success also you would be surprised how many companys would give you a chance if you come across really well and your presentations are clear and get across the point.

Ask for a chance to present yourself and also try to have some form of demo and/or as much research as possible to support it.

If i was selling software to a company i would have to have more than screenshots available id need a working demo, plus its something concrete that they can get there teeth into and hopefully it'll stick in there minds

Ps: whats the worst that could happen by contacting as many as possible

no offence, but it doesnt sound like you know much about the companies you are trying to target, the markets, or running a business.
and im not trying to be mean here, im simply pointing out whats coming across.

whats your background? do you have a business plan? do you know who you are trying to target, and why?
do you know which companies are being used by the clients you are targeting, and why?

i got to be honest, your best bet is to write out a business plan in great detail. spend a lot of time on it. it is how you are going to run your business.

if you have written out a business plan already, then i sugget you rip it up and start again.

you also need to look at what you are selling.
i mean, did you just phone up the PR guys and say 'hey, who does your below the line marketing?'

id be interested in finding out where you are coming from, your background, how much youve really done to move it forward etc, or is this just the starting idea and planning stage?
