thanks for the input soupercomputer, heading in the right direction but not quite there. im working with one of these www.aminocom.com and vlc but am missing some critical functionality, even with the ability to write commands directly to the set top box (amino) i am still having problems. what im looking for is a complete rtsp server solution that i dont have to pay $11,000 for

sounds like a pretty interesting project.

Are you using amino at home or is it a work project?

How sophisticated do you need the server to be? Is it just session control (SETUP and TEARDOWN), or do you need full trick-play (FAST-FORWARD, REWIND)?

Are you trying to write an actual VOD server or just a test harness to validate your RTSP client requests? RTSP is just a derivative of HTTP, so writing your own should not be a huge problem if it comes to that.

I would guess that the RealServer listed here should give you some RTSP functionality (though maybe not full trick-play):

The free version mentioned can be got here:

What is your full setup? I presume you are not using a full cable plant / head-end. Do you have the Amino STB sending requests to a VOD server over a LAN?
