    Howdy,

Have an interview in a company that does this sorta thing tomorrow.
Has anyone ever worked for one of these companies?
    Any advice?

Not sure if its what i want. The details are a bit sketchy about the role.

    Cheers,

    K

Usually this type of role is travelling around Ireland to different locations from the Ballymena to Kerry depending on the company. The type of work is setting up stuff like till drawers, barcode scanners, dsl, switches, crimping cables. Its not great job for morale but your usually your own boss in these things.

As elvis 2002 says. Some POS systems (e.g. for small shops) will be quite standard, but for larger retailers and chains, the POS system software is custom-written stuff, using custom hardware.

Generally though they're built on a Windows NT base using TCP/IP, so if you know something about windows and something about general hardware fixes and networking, you'll be grand.

Chances are you'll be the on-call guy as elvis says, fixing whatever breaks. Personally I wouldn't be crazy about it - because you're working with custom stuff, you can leave at the end with few useful skills for other companies.

I currently work for a POS company but in the software side of things but I would know what you need to know about the system and service side of things if you want to ask me anything.
