 Why was Ballymore Eustace part of Dublin?

Samuel Lewis 1837 map of Ireland shows "islands" of counties in other counties, ie Ballymore Eustace on the border of Wicklow and Kildare was an island of Dublin, as were other cases such as offaly (then Kings County) at Kildangan in west Kildare.

    Does anybody know why?

Its always puzzled me, but only know have I found an online copy of the map :) -

and for other more Cos and other maps, the site is an excellent resource with Ball's account etc -

    Any thoughts? Ta.

Wicklow was originally part of Dublin.

I imagine the enclaves were formed through the amalgamation of previous "units" and people didn't realise they were not contiguous. There are similar anomolies with RC dioceses.

Part of The Netherlands is surrounded by part of Belgium which in turn is surrounded by the rest of The Netherlands.

Part of Monaghan on the Clones - Cavan road is only accessible through Fermanagh (unless you cross fields and streams).

I guess the original county borders weren't as tidy as they are now.

County borders changed a lot over the centuries as did the provencial borders, Clare used to be in Connaught, Cavan also (as part of the kingdom of Breffni) and of course there used to be 5 provinces, the 5th Meath included West Meath and parts of Longford, East cavan, Some of louth etc. The last change that I know about was in 1898 when a lot of Mayo townlands were changed to Roscommon, at the same time some Galway townlands were changed to Roscommon as well. To this day people in Ballaghaderreen will tell you they are from Mayo:

Plenty of RC parishes straddle county borders as well, I know of two here in LM.
