Broadband for Dell Laptop: problem with LAN/network card.

    Hi,

I bought a Dell Inspiron 4000 about 5 years ago. I have recently subscribed to Eircom for Broadband ahd received the kit a few days ago. However, I am unable to connect (and am still using narrowband).
The problem appears to be related to the LAN/Ethernet/Network card. When I go thru' the troubleshooter, I get to the point regarding the LAN leds on the modem. These leds remain off, but when I do the led test, they do work, indicating that it's not a cable and/or modem problem.
Any ideas? How do I check that I do have a LAN/Ethernet/Network card? (It's been 5 years and I can't recall what I got and did not get). I tried re-installing drivers, but there are so many, and the terms (LAN/Ethernet/Network) seem so interchangable I'm wondering if I should just take it to a repair shop?

    Thanks.

Right click on my computer, go to manage, then device manager, then network controllers on the right.

If you don't see one then you don't have one or its not functioning correctly.

As regards not remembering what you got in the machine when you bought it then look around the machine for a label that says service tag > note this down (you'll have a long one and a short one, short one should do) now go to dell enter in the noted service tag and if they still have the info you'll get a complete parts list of what was put into the machine day one.

If the stickers are missing then download Belarc Advisor from www.belarc.com and top right it will list the tag number. It should also be available in the BIOS screen. :p
