    Hey all,

going on holidays with the g/f for a few months and want to buy a new digital camera. €300 is about the limit.

    - A compact, want something that will fix into my pocket when walking/treking.
    - Little/no experience, so something that has a point and shoot mode.
    - Has image stabilization if possible.
    - Can take movies.
    - Inbuilt red eye removal.
    - USB 2.

I was looking at the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX01 or maybe one of the Cannon Powershot cameras. Can any one suggest one that would be better suited to me? Or have any advice on purchasing a camera?

    thx in advance:)

my best advice is go to a camera shop, speak to someone there, try out the cameras in your range, take pictures of the same thing with each and compare, maybe also try something moving. check how long it takes to start up and take(so you dont miss shots), if it takes batteries or their own battery packs(packs imo are better). both you suggested are very good, also the ixus range by canon and coolpix range by nikon are excellent, i believe sony are very good with image stablisation but they tend to over process pics.

try out as many as you can, good luck and hope to see a few up here when you get it

    thanks for the advice melekalikimaka.

Can you suggest any, or any one else, specify camera models? Have no previous experience buying cameras so any thing a sales person in a shop is going to impress me, but still want to get the best value.

One other thing, can people offer opinions one where to buy a camera, in high street or on the Internet?

I got the other half a Casio Exilim Z500 at crimbo time, seems to be a nice performer. As for where to get the camera, theres no reason not to shop online now for it, you'll only get fleeced buying in Ireland.

check out the canon ixus 60 (or 65 if you want large lcd).

That is the compact I would go for at the moment.
