New York

Was thinking about going to New York in the summer, a few days in the city and then maybe a week staying in upstate NY with family. I've been twice before but with my parents when I was younger, so I didn't have to worry about planning anything (this time I'll be with my younger brother and the planning is up to me). I've found flights with Aer Lingus for 450 euro return which seems very reasonable. What I'm worried about is accommodation. All the good hostels seem to be taken, and the cheapest I can find is about 25 euro a night, for a dorm. I would prefer a private room for 2-4 people, if possible. Does anyone know of anywhere clean and safe at a reasonable price? I would rather have a proper budget hotel than a dodgy hostel, safety first and all that. I was thinking a maximum price of 35 euro a night, is that unrealistic? Also, does anyone know anywhere cheap but decent to eat? We'll really be on a budget, but don't want to end up in McDonalds or Sbarro every day. What would be a sensible overall budget for say, 4 nights in NYC, food, and a little sightseeing?

Also, should I worry about problems with red tape and immigration officers? Apparently I don't need a Visa as I have a machine readable British passport obtained in 2004. Not sure about my brother. I remember having to fill in green entry forms last time but I think we got them on the plane. Is there anything else to fill in or apply for? I'm not used to travelling outside Europe.
