he has his own shown called the colbert report, where he pretends to a neocon and most of his guest can't tell if he is or not... we need more things like this in Ireland...

unsurprisingly the media in america is studiously ignoring this, MSMBC did a fifteen minute report on the event and never mentioned colbert.

Fair play to Colbert, from the clips of his show I've seen on OGM he does a great job in general, as has been said, we need more of this in Ireland (although Xit File/Xit Poll, if you can remember it, was actually an Irish port of the Daily Show format, it just flopped due to some bad comedians and bad planning by RTE).

I believe Fox News flipped over to Stephen saying he was a great comedian, then 5 minutes later came back to a seriously embarrassed presenter. :)

It gets funnier though, the pro-republican blog-o-sphere I have seen some posts of people claiming that the Colbert had faked it by stitching the footage together (despite C-Span showing the event live).

And you cannot have a white house cockup without the customary terror alert to follow soon afterwards

The Colbert speech videos have been deleted (all of them) from youtube. What are the odds of that. (as they are finding them it appears).

someone came across ABC's coverage of the night and when the helen thomas press briefing bit was shown, the camera stayed on Bush and you get to see his reactions,

the clip is here but its damn slow, I thin it was made for american broadband... ?

and this guy explains the 'new' humour style, which makes this worth writing about very well
"Personally, I thought Colbert was good, if not his best; he flubbed a couple of jokes notably and recycled some lines from his own show. . . . But I think that the people who said Colbert bombed reveal less about their political leanings than about their understanding of the media culture we live in now. The reason they think he flopped, of course, is that he didn't get many big laughs in the room. And once upon a time, that would have been what mattered. . . .

"Today, however, thanks to the reposting of the Colbert video online, any of you who are curious about Colbert's performance have probably already seen it. Colbert wasn't playing to the room, I suspect, but to the wide audience of people who would later watch on the Internet. If anything, he was playing against the room -- part of the frisson of his performance was the discomfort he generated in the audience, akin to the cringe humor of The Ali G Show. . . .

"To the audience that would watch Colbert on Comedy Central, the pained, uncomfortable, perhaps-a-little-scared-to-laugh reaction shots were not signs of failure. They were the money shots. They were the whole point."
