I bought a domain lat May and have had it hosted with siteground, but never really did anything with it, now i have tried to transfer the registration to godaddy to park it until i get around to doing something with. site ground have rejected the transfer, so i have been informed by godaddy. do i actually own my domain name or do siteground own it, and if i let my registration lapse by not paying siteground another years fees will they keep my domain name or do i have a grace period in which i can retain my domain name by going with a different registrar. i have no real experience with this so any help is greatly appreciated. i have paid the transfer fee to godaddy so i dont really want to lose that. thanks in advance for any info or links.

    regards

    Thump

WHOIS the domain and see who the registered owner is.

i am the registrant, so i presume i am the owner its my email address and home adress etc, so what can i do to transfer my domain or who can i just register it with without havig to have it hosted, ideally id like to register it for 10 years or so, to save this hassle in future.

according to whois.net my registration expires on May 19th, if i dont renew my registration before this do i lose my domain, with some feckers like siteground automatically registering it as soon as my year expires?

Did you contact siteground in advance of requesting the transfer to godaddy?

This is a step often required by domain registers to prevent unauthorised transfers.

Some registers like eircom demand fax on company headed paper, others have an email or automated option on the control panel.

Godaddy will probably retry each day for a few days, if this is a step you missed.

EMail siteground with your domain details, they'll confirm your details.

Then tell them you'd lock to unlock your domain to transfer out. Make sure you get it to GoDaddy (if that's your choice!) before 18 May or you'll need to renew a year with SG and then with GD again.
