Inspiron 6000, PC2-4200 or PC2-5300, does it matter?

Hi, I have just ordered some PC2-5300 (DDR2-SDRAM) for my inspiron 6000 as this was memory that I thought was compatible with my laptop. I have seen varying sales online that state the 5300 is compatable but others that state the the 4200 is the required ram. My question is does this matter and is this not just the speed (i.e. 5300 is faster) and should both not be compatable? Will the system not just round the speed down from 667mhz for the 5300 to 400mhz (i think) for the 4200? I am hoping that i just paid slightly more for the faster memory that is not required than buying memory that is not compatable. Always the case with buying memory....

Yea both speeds should work. You'll prob find that if the new RAM is too fast for the laptop it will drop down to the highest speed it can support. Also if you have other memory modules installed that are slower, the faster modules will drop their speed to match the slowest one.

Therefore you are probably better off buying RAM that matches your current module.

thanks irlrobins, thats what i was hoping. So basically it will drop the speed to 533 rather than 667. I can live with that. I only have the 256 that it was packaged with at the moment and i'd assume thats pc2-4200 so the memory should run at 533. It was only 2 euro extra for the 667 memory so I went for that as i though it was compatable for the lower speed but then after ordering it I wasnt sure so thanks...
