I bought a whole new PC off Komplett a few months back. I got it with 2 sata drives, one is 90G and the other is 300G. I was going to put windows on the 90G and store all my music, movies etc. on the 300G. I have tried a number of times to install windows on thee 90G using the drives that came with the motherboard for sata drives. It install the primary files but then when it restarts to boot into windows it just goes blank, this happens were the win xp logo would usually show up. Any ideas?

I have been running the computer from an old 120G IDE drive for the time being. But cant even get the satas to show up in windows now either. Please help!

If both drives are OK to be deleted then you could reformat them in

Go to Control panel/Admin Tools/ Computer Management/disk management

Then right click on the drive to format.

Or use your XP installation Disk to reinstall.

    Then install on the 90G

What type of motherboard have you got and how are you installing the drivers for the SATA connections.
There are a couple of possibilities here depending on the type of motherboard you have.

Either you have to press F6 and install a third party raid driver , ( my last board , an MSI neoplatinum , had to have this for the SATA to work. )

Or you have to go into the BIOS and make sure that both PATA and SATA interfaces are enabled. On some motherboards the default setting is PATA and SATA is not enabled unless you do it yourself.

So anyway , try the above , if it doesnt work then post the make and model of the motherboard and I'll have a look !!

I installed the raid drivers by pressing F6 and used a floppy disk to install them, that all went fine.

The mother board is: Gigabyte GA-K8NMF9

download their drivers direct from their website if you are using the ones off the disk that came with the mobo.

Had fun building a pc for a friend using a gigabyte mobo and a sata harddrive.

Was fixed by doing the above 2-3 times in a row until it worked.

OK , I have downloaded your MB manual and am looking at page 36 , there is a special note about SATA and installing an OS on it.
If you are using driver version 1.2 then there are special instructions ,

It says you must enable NV ide/sata raid funtion and manually set the SATA2 class from 0101 to 0104 before you can install an OS onto a SATA drive.

    Have you done this ?

I have not done this, being lazy I didnt think the manual would say much more than press F6 and install drivers. Thanks a million Andy, I'll check it out when I get home and try and finally get this sorted!

If your machine is picking up the drives then it's not bios issue you may have a damaged disk. Although seeing as they are new that's prolly not the case.

I would suggest you check and see if the bios picks it up. If not, go to their website and check for an update. I've had major issues with sata drives that were solved by a bios upgrade.

I find sata generally annoying! One of the times I installed windows, one of the sata's showed up then I installed some usb, sound drivers etc. and it had gone.

Yes these options are in the Bios and should be easily set up . Its all on page 36 and also shows the options that you have to change.

Layke its got nothing to do with a failing drive , this is fairly common for SATA drives , a lot of motherboards have to have to have the options set properly before the SATA will work the way you want it too.
